Setting Up the Perfect Ferret Home

Toys and much more. Before you begin shopping for your furry friend, read on to find out a little bit more about ferrets and what type of environment is best for them to live a happy, healthy life.

Are ferrets good companions?

Yep! Ferrets are friendly by nature and enjoy interacting and playing with their pet parents. They can also be trained to use a litter box and perform tricks! Ferrets enjoy spending time outside their cage but need to be closely supervised since they tend to be a little sneaky and love to hide. (They are a member of the weasel family, after all!) But, like any pet, ferrets aren’t for every would-be pet parent. We recommend checking with your local veterinarian first, especially if you have other pets or small children.

The skinny on ferret supplies

Here’s a list of everything you’ll need when setting up a home for your ferret.

  • A wire cage with a solid floor and a door that can be securely closed
  • Ferrets love to burrow, so be sure to choose bedding that is conducive to that activity, such as a blanket or a sleep sack
  • A litter box that fits comfortably in their cage, with litter specifically designed for ferrets
  • A food dish and water bottle to keep your furry friend well fed and hydrated
  • Ferrets are carnivores, so specially formulated ferret food is the best way to make sure they get everything they need to maintain a healthy diet
  • Toys (that aren’t easily destroyed and ingested) help keep your ferret entertained

Hamster Toys for Playing

Why not branch out and get your hamster a wooden ladder to climb, a bridge to walk across, or a hanging swing? As curious creatures, the more toys you provide, the more new things they have to sniff, fun they get to have, and areas they get to explore.

The opportunities are endless to create a wonderful little world for your furry friend. It’s fun for the hamster and a joy for you to watch. Pet parents who are members of Petco’s Repeat Delivery program can have their hamster’s toys delivered right to their door with free shipping and extra savings on select orders.

What type of care do ferrets need?

Once you have all of your ferret supplies, you want to make sure you know how to properly care for your new pet. Though they may exhibit some behaviors similar to a cat or a dog, ferrets should primarily be kept in their cages unless you’re directly interacting with them. When you do take them out for exercise and playtime, be sure to prep the room to eliminate any escape routes or potentially dangerous setups and keep a close eye on them at all times.

Ferrets can also encounter various health problems, so it’s important to have regular checkups with a veterinarian to make sure your furry friend stays in tip-top shape.

They may be sneaky and swift, but ferrets can also be friendly and fun-loving. Creating an environment where they feel comfortable will help your new pet settle in and enjoy life with you. Sign up for Repeat Delivery to make sure you never run out of their must-have supplies. Pet parents who are members of this program enjoy free shipping and extra savings on select items!
