Freshwater Inverts: Freshwater Shrimp, Snails, Crabs & More

Paddle into Petco for a selection of freshwater inverts that will please any a-fish-ionado. Choose from a variety of freshwater shrimp, snails, crabs, and more to add to your underwater aquarium. Whether you’re just dipping your toe into the water tank scene or have been deep into the lifestyle for years, Petco has the supplies and support you need to ensure things go swimmingly with your freshwater inverts.

In general, freshwater inverts can be a great introduction for those just starting out with an aquarium of their own. Many types of freshwater snails, crabs and other invertebrates are usually much less demanding, resilient, and, on the whole, pretty easy to maintain. Freshwater snails even help you keep your tank clean by grazing on nuisance algae. While they may not require as much attention as other undersea species, aquatic pet parents will need to keep a few things in mind to ensure life for their freshwater shrimp and other inverts is smooth sailing.

It might be tempting to pick the most eye-catching invert species on display and put them all in the same tank, but that may not be the best solution for the inhabitants. Many species of freshwater crabs are great for controlling algae outbreak, but they can easily become aggressive towards smaller fish and other inverts that are in their space. Be sure to provide meaty treats and seaweed to keep them from making a meal of their tank mates. Other inverts like freshwater shrimp are strictly nocturnal feeders who require plenty of hiding spaces, are sensitive to temperature changes, and may not get along with other small fish or shrimp. See a Petco associate for tips on which freshwater inverts go great together to ensure a happy and healthy aquatic lifestyle for all.
