My pet died giving birth. What causes labor complications in pets?

Hello. I am so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, it sounds like more was going on with your pet than abnormal heat cycles, & it was just poor veterinary care that she woke up in the middle of surgery & needed to be sedated again. Stress & pain may have contributed to her death, but there may have been some other underlying heart disease or cancer present that was just too much for her to recover from. Please accept my condolences on your loss.

It can be difficult to determine why one puppy in a litter is stillborn - there may have been difficulty with labor or a genetic disorder. If Pinky seemed to have difficulty giving birth to this puppy it would be a good idea to take her to the vet to make sure she isn't having a dystocia, or difficult labor. If there is more than one stillborn puppy or you have concerned about the other puppy I'd recommend having your vet examine Pinky and her entire litter.

I am so sorry your Stela lost her babies. Usual gestation period is a maximum of 68 days, so three months pregnancy is way too long and the babies must have died about three weeks ago. THere could have been something wrong with the babies or there may have been a hormonal problem that they were not born when they were ready to be born. I suggest you take Stela to your veterinarian for a wellness exam making sure that she is okay and does not have an infection that needs to be treated.

I'm so sorry for your loss. From the picture, I can tell that she definitely had a very angry and inflamed uterus and that there's no question that she had a pyometra. The large tube of tissue in the picture would be about the size of your pinkie in a health dog, but it is enlarged because it's full of puss. Unfortunately pyometra makes dogs very ill and sometimes their bodies are not strong enough to survive the surgery. Complications could be related to infection, electrolyte status, organ failure, and others.

Kalu will need to see a vet for treatment and possibly emergency surgery. There can be many causes for not being able to birth additional puppies, such as small hips in the mother, too large puppies, electrolyte disorders, etc.

I am so sorry you came home to two dead kittens! Newborn kittens are very fragile, and it could the one who was cold simply wasn't strong enough to make it. As for the one with the intestines out, it could be a birth defect causing the intestines to be outside the body. Without seeing them in person, I can't say for certain. I can say keep the father away from the kittens until they are older. Mother cats can be very protective of their kittens, and the father should not be around until the kittens are weaned. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. I am not sure how old she was, but losing a pet no matter how old or young is still hard to cope with. Over time it does get a little easier to cope with this lose and you should always cherish the good moments you had with your pet. As a side, you do have the option of getting any pet a necropsy (examination of the body rigth after they pass) to hopefully determine the cause of death. It is impossible to know for sure what caused her demise based on the symptoms you described but it is possible she may have had a stroke, an underlying heart condition or cancer.
