Most pet parents are familiar with topical or oral flea and tick preventives. So which is better for your pet—topical or oral?

Gentacalm spray contains an antibiotic (Gentamicin), steroid (betamethasone), and yes isopropyl alcohol is in it to. Other ingredients it has are propylene glycol, methylparaben and propylparaben as preservatives, as well as purified water.

Gentamicin can be given by the intramuscular, subcutaneous or intravenous routes. It also comes in topical preparations for eyes, skin and ears. You should only give this drug under guidance from a veterinarian- it can cause serious side effects including kidney failure.

Topical spray based on cortisone can be used. Topical ointment, usually based on steroids and antibiotics, can be used as well. Please discuss these options with your local veterinarian as these medications are only on prescription.

The gentocin spray has steroid and antibiotic in it so it is an appropriate treatment for hotspots. The other spray is not a prescribed medicine so will not have a gauranteed efficacy. Hotspots are sore so the spray likely sting a little. I would persevere with what your vet has prescribed to you, at the end of the day they habe examined Angel, and are a qualified professional and know what is best for your pet.

Hello. Yes, it is most likely that the gentamicin has induced the deafness in your dog. Most times this is reversible, but in some cases the deafness is permanent. I would not use any more gentamycin. Most ear infections are due to underlying allergies, so the first thing to do is have a culture done to see if antibiotics are even warranted ( may have to wait at least several days after stopping medications to obtain the culture ). I would also start a low dose with a decreasing dosage of steroids to decrease inflammation in the ears & start an anti-allergy medication such as Apoquel or Cytopoint to see if the ears can be kept at least more comfortable without the use of topical ear medications. I would not recommend using this medication on your dog. This medicine contains very unusual combination of active ingredients (antibiotic, anti-fungal agent, steroid and an agent against skin parasites). Giving steroids in fungal infections and parasites infestation is contraindicated but in this medicine they have been combined. It sounds that the tablets are for ' all possible skin problems' but by using it, for example in case of a mange or ringworm it could make things worse.

Augmentine is an antibiotic, it treats bacterial infections. Terbinafine is an antifungal that treats fungal infections. If your vet suspects both then Augmentine is also necessary. the most common side effects are vomiting, lack of appetite and diarrhea.
