My vet prescribed NeoMac for ringworm. Is ivermectin correct for dogs?

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection. First of all, you will need to ask the vet to perform a skin scrape (or similar test) - this might reveal an infection. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Unfortunately there are several skin diseases in dogs that can look just like ringworm - bacterial skin infections causing epidermal collarettes would be most common. Your best course of action would be to have your vet examine Kapano since oral medication is often required for ringworm - even though there is a single lesion it may be elsewhere in his fur and contamination of the environment can cause reinfection. I know some people and veterinarians will use over the counter creams containing miconazole, but they often are not very effective. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian.

Ivermectin is a dewormer/anti-parasiticide. It does nothing to treat wounds so I doubt your vet gave you this medication to treat this problem. The D'Mag spray can be used on wounds but it is contraindicated for use in deep wounds that may have entered the abdominal cavity.

Instead of the neomac i would recommend a medication called Itraconazole that is taken orally for 3-4 weeks, it's more effective for this sort of problem. i would also recommend to treat possible skin mites which are often the primary cause.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Izzy has one of the most frustrating dermatologic issues we face with our pets. Fungi are notorious for taking a very long time to kill or at least have managed. Unfortunately, there are multiple factors that contribute to a dog getting ringworm, and part of it is inate susceptibility that Izzy has. Inflammation of the skin will make skin infections of any kind more likely, so that should be a priority to get under control. There are shampoos available with a prescription, so ask your vet about them. Also, on rare occasion, oral antifungal therapy is warranted. This is less than 5% of cases from my experience, but if it is widespread on her body, it could be necessary. As she is susceptible, using a topical anti-fungal shampoo would be beneficial to minimize chances of recurrence once Izzy's skin has cleared-up. The itching needs to be explored further because it is what leads to skin inflammation and thus a higher chance of having an infection. Without being able to examine her, it is difficult to say whether the ringworm is under control, so continue to follow up with your vet as it can take weeks to months for it to clear up completely. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Personally, I no longer use Ivermectin to treat Demodex. I stopped about a year ago. I started using Bravecto (flea and tick preventative) that is used to treat Demodex off label. It is not marketed for use in cases of Demodex but many vets, including myself, have been using Bravecto to treat Demodex cases with very fast responses to treatment. I would discuss this as a different treatment option with your veterinarian. Rather than using Ivermectin injections, the Bravecto is given as a treat and lasts for about 3 months for one single dose. I hope this helps! The first thing I would want to ensure is that this is in-fact a fungal infection. Since you have seen multiple doctors, I'll assume they diagnosed it through a fungal culture or a positive response to a UV light. If this has not been done, then I highly recommend you have it done. If it's definitely ringworm, then you will have to treat this for a long time before it goes away. It can take a few months sometimes. The terbinafine cream is helpful, but for an infection that has spread all over the body, I would be giving the dog antifungal tablets. You will need a veterinarian to prescribe these.
