Is Ivermectin the right medicine for my dog's wound treatment?

Hello. Yes, Ivermectin is used to treat demodectic mange in dogs. The dose is given once a day & repeat skin scrapes are done. Once there are 2 negative scrapes where no live mites are found, the ivermectin will be discontinued. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Capstar will kill maggots, but the maggots will continue to come back since they are caused by flies laying eggs in a necrotic wound. The maggots are not the issue here, the wound is the problem, and it should be addressed first with a vet.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection. First of all, you will need to ask the vet to perform a skin scrape (or similar test) - this might reveal an infection. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). It looks like NeoMac is ivermectin which is not used to treat ringworm. I recommend to clear up the confusion with your veterinarians. These maggot wounds are treatable, but turpentine and Betadine won't kill them all and will actually make the wound worse. They are best killed with camphor powder, but the maggots need to be pulled out from in the wound, or they will cause a severe infection. In order to pull them out, the dog often needs to be sedated. For this and other wound treatment, I highly recommend you take him to a vet doctor. For now, you should flush the wound using a syringe or other dispensing device with normal, clean, warm water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because dogs tend to hate this and will try to run away. I recommend having someone help you with this and holding Brando to make sure the wound gets flushed well. Infection is the biggest concern with these wounds; so after flushing, it's best to apply an antibacterial cream to the wound and a bandage. In order to keep the wound clean, it's best to flush the wound 1-2 times a day and gently wipe away any big crusts - make sure not to scrub the wound, because this can make it worse. Apply the antibacterial cream after each flushing. I hope that helps and Brando gets better soon.

I would not recommend using this medication on your dog. This medicine contains very unusual combination of active ingredients (antibiotic, anti-fungal agent, steroid and an agent against skin parasites). Giving steroids in fungal infections and parasites infestation is contraindicated but in this medicine they have been combined. It sounds that the tablets are for ' all possible skin problems' but by using it, for example in case of a mange or ringworm it could make things worse.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Personally, I no longer use Ivermectin to treat Demodex. I stopped about a year ago. I started using Bravecto (flea and tick preventative) that is used to treat Demodex off label. It is not marketed for use in cases of Demodex but many vets, including myself, have been using Bravecto to treat Demodex cases with very fast responses to treatment. I would discuss this as a different treatment option with your veterinarian. Rather than using Ivermectin injections, the Bravecto is given as a treat and lasts for about 3 months for one single dose. I hope this helps!
