My puppy splashes water and lies in it. How to prevent infection?

Hello. Many puppies are susceptible to mild skin infection, & they usually will outgrow this. Bathing twice a week in any mild shampoo will definitely help by decreasing the bacterial numbers on the skin. Make sure you use cool water & rinse all soap off thoroughly. Causes of skin disease in a young puppy can be due to a bacterial or yeast skin infection, ringworm (fungus) or demodex (non-contagious mite). Puppy pyoderma (skin infection) is common on the belly of young puppies and they tend to out grow it. I would have your Vet examine your dog and then prescribe medications. I hope this helps!

You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

That would depend what is this infection exactly, it could be mites, bacterias or fungus, each has a different course of treatment. If unsure- take Paopao to the vet in order to get it checked and treated.

Puppies commonly get skin infections on their belly because they have a weak immune system. I would take him to the vet to get medications started. Good luck and kisses to Max!

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). This looks like he has developed an infection in his skin folds from either an abrasion from chewing or from his saliva. You can try to gently clean the areas with mild soap and water and apply Neosporin on the areas twice a day. If it isn't improving, I would have your vet take a look at it. They may put him on some oral antibiotics or oral antifungals if yeast is present. I would also consider starting to put him in a kennel or enclosure when you leave to help protect him and prevent him from tearing up your backyard. I hope this helps!
