How to choose safe tapeworm medicine for my dog traveling to Europe?

The dewormer i usually recommend is called Drontal plus, bear in mind that unlike the flea/tick products, dewormers do not protect your dog from future infestation, it only kills the worms on spot. for fleas and ticks i usually recommend Bravecto tablet or Advantix spot on. all these medications are considered to be high quality and safe.

The most common tapeworm is flea transmitted like you discuss. There are over the counter medicines and the drug you would want to use is called Praziquantal. Only a single dose with drontal Plus is typically required. A follow-up dose 1-3 weeks after the initial treatment may be given if needed. I hope this helps! Hello. There are wormers available over the counter that will take care of tapeworms. Make sure the product contains the ingredient praziquantel, or you can pick up SafeGuard canine wormer at Petco. If you want to be sure of what you might be seeing befors giving Poppy any wormer, you can always take a fecal sample to your vet for analysis. None of these medications should cause problems related to Tasha's MDR1 gene. Personally, I prefer giving oral deworming medications rather than injections, but as I said, this is purely personal preference. Either Droncit or Dolpac 10 should be effective to treat tapeworms and it should not be an issue to administer the additional active ingredients in Dolpac 10. Many deworming medications contain more than one active ingredient and simply provide for a more broad spectrum of treatment. If Tasha would experience a reaction to the Dolpac 10 (which would be quite unusual), you could also ask your vet if he can prescribe Droncit tablets from either a local or online pharmacy if you are more comfortable with this course of treatment.

Praziquantel ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=35693 ) is the best medication available to treat tapeworms, which resemble grains of rice. It is considered safe for pregnant and nursing dogs, and is a category B drug during pregnancy according to the FDA (basically that animal studies have not demonstrated a risk to the fetus). It should be perfectly fine to give Lilu this medication. Since tapeworms are transmitted by eating either tapeworm infected fleas or rodents, be sure that Lilu is receiving a high quality flea preventative regularly. Frontline (while not always my favorite flea preventative) is safe for use in pregnant dogs. I hope that all goes well!
