My dog mated. Why no blood or discharge after Depo-Provera shot?

The Depo Provera (Medroxyprogesterone acetate) drug is effective immediately and can be used to regulate a pets reproductive cycle when given IM every 5 months. It has to be strictly monitored by your vet. Although I will say that most vets won't use this drug because it has some serious possible side effects including iatrogenic: Diabetes Mellitus, Hypothyroidism, and Pyometra. I myself won't use or recommend this drug in any of my patients. And besides paying the female, there are no alternative ways to prevent pregnancy in dogs that I am aware of at this time.

No, those are not signs of early pregnancy. Dogs do not get "morning sickness" like people do. Her symptoms are most likely related to the mis-mating injection she received. I do not know what type of injection is used in India for mis-mating however the one we use here in the US causes these side effects: anorexia, excitation, depression, vomiting or diarrhea. Some dogs may also be at risk for getting a severe uterine infection after the injection. The injection we use here works best and has less side effects if you wait to administer it after their heat cycle is finished. If I was your vet, I would have waited to administer the injection for a couple weeks. That being said, I do not know what medication they used. I suggest you contact your vet and find out more information and ask them about these symptoms she is having. IT is very difficult for me to say much without knowing what was used. Hope this helps. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If your Vet only removed the ovaries then she still has a uterus and that is where the blood comes from. After this heat she will no longer have them because the ovaries are gone and they provide the hormonal influence. If an intact male dog mated with her after the surgery I do not think she will get pregnant as the ovary makes the eggs. I hope this helps!

It sounds like she may have an infection in her uterus and needs emergency surgery. It does sound like she may have a flea allergy but I think the vomiting and discharge are unrelated. I think she should be rechecked. It sounds like she had an open pyometra or uterine infection. While the discharge could still be normal it's also possible that she needs antibiotics for a bit longer. Sometimes the injections and antibiotics do not completely clear the infection and surgery is necessary.

How do you know that the progesterone level is high? That would be very unusual unless she is in heat and ovulating. The discharge in the photo does not appear to be from a heat cycle and you stated she is spayed. If she is spayed she cannot have high progesterone. I suggest you have her checked out by a veterinarian as this is not normal discharge for a spayed female dog.

That is unusual. This may be from spaying her when in heat, and the discharge is just coming out. The hormones also can take up to six weeks to go down so she may be having a false pregnancy even though she’s been spayed. I would watch her closely. These symptoms should resolve over the next few weeks. If the bleeding continues that is not normal and could indicate a problem with the internal incision.
