My dog has snail-like things in poop and itchy legs. Is it hookworm?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It looks like Bruce’s feces has tapeworm proglottids (or sections) in it. These are transmitted by fleas (when dogs eat them) which are likely to be causing Bruce’s itching. I recommend starting him on a monthly flea control product such as FrontLine and a flea shampoo. He should be seen by a vet to confirm the presence of tapeworms and receive appropriate deworming. Your vet can also examine Bruce for any other underlying conditions that may be causing these symptoms. You should bring a stool sample from your puppy to speed up the diagnosis. These could be roundworms which are obviously infesting the gastrointestinal system. A check up and appropriate medications are needed to confirm this clinical suspicion and resolve it effectively. Take a poo sample with you so your vet can identify the worms.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Bella! Causes for scooting/dragging bottom are: full/impacted or infected anal glands, itchy bottom, stool stuck to the anus and sometimes worms. Causes of bloody and mucousy stool and a decreased appetite are many: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, food allergy or intolerance. If she is on monthly heart worm prevention it also is a monthly dewormer making worms less likely. The only way to know for sure is to drop a stool sample off at your vet to have it tested. I can't tell if what is in her stool is worms or strings of mucous. I would start Bella on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. Check er bottom for hanging pieces of feces. if she continues to scoot then she should have her anal glands checked. Below is a link to a good general dewormer. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry that Rizzo is having this issue. I would not be concerned about the hiccups. That can certainly be normal in puppies. I suggest you video her doing that though so you can show the vet what she is doing. The same with the "nightmares" - video if at all possible. Dogs don't really have nightmares. They can dream and will sometimes "run" or "bark" while dreaming but nothing "violent". I would be concerned that she may be having seizures. I'm not saying it is impossible for her to have night terrors it is just not that common and it is a diagnosis of exclusion. Meaning we cannot test directly for it so we have to rule out all underlying potential medical issues first. Without videos it will be hard for your vet to know what direction to take. I cannot tell you if she has something serious or not. More testing is likely needed. A severe hookworm burden can cause all her symptoms so keep that in mind....

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes! It does look like Brady is passing adult worms. If that is fresh stool and hasn't been sitting outside for hours. I recommend collecting a stool sample and having it tested by your Vet. The worms seem shorter and thicker than round worms so it is important to know if the is fresh stool or old stool since free living nematodes do come to eat stool. A stool sample (looking at the eggs) will help identify the exact parasite he is passing and then how to treat it. Dogs usually do acting normal when they have worms. He is only 6 months so intestinal parasites are common. I hope this helps and I wish Brady the best!

Hookworms are present in the environment so Sugar may be getting constantly reinfected. The best way to prevent this is to have her on a monthly heartworm prevention (like Heartgard or Trifexis). This will protect Sugar from heartworm disease and intestinal parasites as well. However, the problems you describe Sugar as having sounds more like skin allergy issues rather than a problem with worms. I think its perfectly feasible to assume that if you are seeing hair in Figlio's poop that this could be causing irritation of his rectum. Often-times the hair gets stuck between sections of the feces, causing them to string together. This causes the poop to kind of hang out a bit, and subsequent scooting. Check his back end to ensure there is no poop there that didn't quite make its way out. I would also recommend keeping hair ties out of his reach here moving forward to prevent this from continuing to be a problem. Another causes of scooting is an anal gland issue. If you are not seeing any hanging poop then its best to get his anal glands checked and squeezed if they are full. Some dogs have a problem expressing these themselves when they go #2, so they need to have them manually expressed once every 4-6 weeks. Worm prevention is the same for him as any other pet, so you can go with anything really such as Pyrantel Palmoate, Fenbendazole, etc. However, if he is on a monthly heartworm prevention, it already has an intestinal dewormer in it. And if his stools are otherwise solid, then there is a low chance he has worms. Best of luck with your fur baby Figlio and I hope that you get to the bottom of his mysterious butt scooting soon!
