My puppy has hookworms, bloody poop, hiccups, and bad dreams. What's wrong?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sakari! If Sakari is not eating and vomiting when drinking she needs to see a Veterinarian. She is so small at just 4 lbs that she is at risk for dehydration and low blood sugar. When dogs defecate blood that indicates colon inflammation and also indicates that severe dehydration is even a higher risk. Sakari may have such a high worm burden that all the worms dying are causing stomach and intestinal inflammation or they are causing an obstruction. She also could have something else going on, especially if she isn't vaccinated, like parvo virus or another viral or bacterial infection. The best thing for Sakari is to see a Vet today for supportive care. I wish you the best!

Hi,t hanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dewowmers have the potential to cause an upset stomach such as vomit, diarrhea and decreased appetite. Though I am worried something else is going on since you lost a puppy recently. I worry most about parvo virus in puppies this age, especially if they are yet to be vaccinated. I would have this puppy seen today by your Vet and tested for parvo virus as it is VERY contagious and if it is the cause it will likely affect the entire litter. If it isn't parvo the Vet can at least get this puppy feeling better and prevent dehydration. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Your dog appears to be young (under a year) from what I can tell based on the pictures and information you provided. The most likely diseases are as follows: 1. Parvo, a virus that primarily attacks the immune system and intestines of dogs and is very lethal if left without supportive care. 2. Intestinal parasites which can cause intestinal blockage and even anemia (depletion of red blood cells). 3. Other viruses with varying severities. This is not an exhaustive list, just the most common things for a puppy. They will all lead to dehydration and other secondary issues which can all be severe enough to cause death. Whatever the underlying disease, he looks very ill and needs attention from a veterinarian immediately. I would recommend taking him to your nearest emergency veterinary hospital as soon as possible. Her condition is not normal, and I would recommend following-up with your veterinarian this morning as soon as they open for a reassessment appointment. She may need some labs ran to ensure nothing major is wrong internally which is something for you to discuss with your vet. At a minimum, it is likely she will need anti-nausea medication as well as some medications to help with the diarrhea. If left untreated, she could become very dehydrated which would make her extremely sick. It is much better to get on top of these things before they become a bigger problem. I believe I see milk in the bowl you have in the picture there. If that is the case I would stop giving that right away. Domino is more than old enough not to still be getting puppy milk. If she continues to vomit after stopping the milk, then it's best to take her to your vet for a full examination and possible testing to determine why she is vomiting so that we know how to best help her. Also I would recommend bathing her in Dawn dish detergent to strip all the fleas off her for now. Make sure not to get any in her eyes and follow up with an oatmeal based or aloe based shampoo and conditioner to prevent her skin from getting too dry. She is old enough for Revolution topical flea and heartworm preventative from your local vet, so I would recommend getting her hat to protect her from the fleas here moving forward. Intestinal worms are common in puppies, and that could be the cause of her diarrhea. She could have a respiratory infection or irritation of the nasal passages causing the reverse sneezing. Since she has not gotten better, it's time to see a vet. I'd take her into one in the morning. Best of luck.

Hi, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to say whether Tucker's lethargy is due to illness or from the vaccine. When puppies his age are lethargic, have vomiting, and/or are having diarrhea, I always worry about the possibility they have parvo. Since Tucker has two of the three, I would highly recommend having him examined by a veterinarian and having a parvo test run as well as a fecal examination as soon as possible. The parasites could also be the culprit, but even if he doesn't have parvo, it is better to check and know for sure. Additionally, this will give the doctor a chance to give Tucker some supportive care, if needed, to help him through his illness. Hope this helps!
