My dog wakes up early to eat grass. Is he sick? What can I do?

Given the symptoms described, your dog may have GI distress. Slowly reintroduce small amounts of water and a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice. If there is no improvement, have him physically examined by your veterinarian.

This could be secondary to gastrointestinal upset from many possible reasons such as dietary indiscretion or foreign body ingestion, among many other reasons. If he is otherwise doing well, it is likely to be something mild like dietary indiscretion causing him to have an upset stomach. Keep a close eye on him and make sure he is drinking water. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Charley. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. I do not think that her recent symptoms are due to age. I would recommend blood and urine testing to determine if she has an underlying illness. If so, she can be started on treatment to help her feel better and potentially fix the problem. If the issue cannot be cured, such as kidney disease, treatment can slow the progression and improve her quality of life. I hope this information helps!

Sonetimes dogs get a bit of a tummy upset called gastritis. It can be caused by eating something rancid or an infection. Sometimes they simply have too much acid. Eating grass is a sign the tummy is sore. He will likely be a little unsettled but if he is not continually vomiting I would let him rest overnight then take him to the vet in the morning g if he is still poorly. Don't feed anything At the moment.

Poor Ace! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something he shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or other even organ disease. It's likely the diarrhea and the not eating are related. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. Since Ace will not eat anything you offer, he needs treatment and medication to get and feel better. When pets don't eat well, they often don't drink as much as they should and can become dehydrated. Some dogs acquire a taste for grass and will chew it for no reason. However, it could be a sign of an underlying problem as well. I would suggest you give him an antacid tablet once per day every day for about a week or two to see if it helps. I assume you can get Famotidine in Bulgaria at your local pharmacy? He can have 10mg once a day. I would give it on an empty stomach and then wait 30 to 40 minutes and then offer his food. I would try this first to see what happens.

Eating grass is a non-specific finding that is sometimes seen in some dogs and can happen literally for no reason other than them wanting to taste it. There are times that dogs do it when they have a stomach upset but that is not consistent so I would not say that is what is going on with Greyson necessarily. Best of luck!
