My old dog is vomiting grass, diarrhea, and tired. Is it serious?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. You need to seek veterinary care for her. Her symptoms have gone on long enough that they will unlikely resolve without treatment. The difficulty breathing is worrisome as well. She will need fecal testing and possibly laboratory work depending on her exam findings. Based on these results, treatment can be prescribed. I would discuss the probiotic with your veterinarian as well. There is a large variation in quality and some have actually been found to contain pathogenic bacteria. Due to her age I'm concerned with Lexie not feeling well with diarrhea and vomiting. She has gastroenteritis, perhaps from eating things in the yard, but regardless of the cause she will get worse if she becomes dehydrated. I recommend a veterinary exam soon so they can start treatment and run blood work and perhaps a fecal to determine the cause. That way then can be sure to use the right medication to get her better. Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm so sorry to hear that Marble is unwell. This is a situation that definitely warrants a trip to the vet. Given her advanced age, cancer is a possibility. Other possible causes include severe gastroenteritis (gut infection), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, or parasites. The vet will start by performing a thorough physical exam, looking for any bumps or sources of bleeding. They may recommend blood work or x-rays to further pinpoint the problem. At minimum, they can offer supportive treatments such as fluid therapy to combat dehydration from the diarrhea, stomach protectants and pain medications. The sooner that she can see the vet, the better. In the meantime, I would offer her small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and plain white rice, which should be easy to digest. Yes it would be best to have her seen. Decreased appetite and lethargy are very common symptoms of many diseases, many of which may be treatable. The best way to know what is going on (diagnosis), how serious it is, and how to help her feel better is to have her seen. That is very concerning that she is not eating, vomiting, and losing weight. If blood work is normal than your vet could do x-rays and/or an abdominal ultrasound to look for abnormalities. Your vet could also do an ACTH stim test to make sure she is on the correct dose of vetoryl. Your vet could also treat with an anti-nausea medication called Cerenia and an antibiotic called Metronidazole to see if that helps with the vomiting and diarrha. Hope she feels better soon.

I'm very sorry to hear that Peanut isn't feeling good. Unfortunately with the symptoms you have described, especially the lethargy and diarrhea, I am very concerned about what he may have eaten. Any number of plants etc can potentially be poisonous, including mushrooms. I would check your yard (or wherever you weee with Peanut when all this started) for mushrooms or any other types of plants. Look also for indications of any other items-has something been spilled or sprayed on the grass? Are there other pieces of whatever Peanut may have eaten lying around? I know you mentioned financial concerns, unfortunately with the symptoms you describe I feel the best thing is for Peanut to go see a veterinarian. Given such a rapid decline through the day today I am very concerned about how Peanut will progress from here. If you simply cannot make it to the ER then monitor Peanut closely overnight, try and tempt him to eat and drink, and make sure to take him outside frequently to relieve himself. Schedule an appointment with your regular veterinarian first thing in the morning. I hope Peanut's condition improves for you!

Unfortunately, her symptoms are very vague - they don't point to one specific illness or disease process. It sounds like her abdomen/stomach hurts. I suggest you take her to the vet for an exam. She is pacing from pain - I'm sure you don't want her to continue to be in pain. At her age I would be worried and it is best to catch this problem early.
