My dog has dry sores near her eyes. How do I diagnose and treat them?

I would recommend Diamond get a skin scraping and fungal culture from her veterinarian to rule out demodex mites as a cause and a fungal infection such as ringworm. Both can be treated with medications when diagnosed. Of course, it could be due to another cause such as allergies, but I would start with a skin scrape and culture first. Poor guy. Scratching to this degree indicates Stoney either has an ear infection, demodex mites, or a severe allergy. I would start with a good ear exam to look for debris or foul odors in the ears. If that shows nothing, then a skin scrape should be done to look for possible mites. If all that is ruled out, then you should focus your treatment on skin allergies. Allergies in dogs can be to something in the environment, fleas, or an ingredient in the pets food. Its best to place an elizabethan collar on him to prevent him from causing further trauma to himself until you can get him seen again by your vet. That looks like it could be an infection, skin mites or perhaps ringworm (which humans can get). I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian if the lesion does not start getting better on it's own within the next few days. May sure he cannot rub the area and don't put anything on the area since it's so close to his eye. You can also have him examined sooner and not wait. A skin infection (bacterial or fungal), immune mediated disease such as lupus or pemphigus foliaceous, skin mites such as demodex or allergies. Looks like it could be an allergy. It could also be skin mites or a bacterial skin infection. I think it looks like Dixie needs to be seen by a vet. I don't think it's an emergency but I would try to get her in for an exam sometime in the next week. I hope this helps. Best wishes!

Poor Kona! That area could be an insect bite, infection, ringworm, or even a mass. The only way to determine what it is is taking her to your vet. They may want to try to get a sample of it, even though it's in a tough location to try to figure out what it is. They will also be able to recommend the best course of treatment as well.

That looks like it is quite painful. Your first order of business should be preventing your dog from causing any further harm. Obtain an e-collar or make one at home. You should be able to find a website or video on how to do this. Next step will be applying some antibiotic ointment, preferably one that also contains some steroid to help with inflammation and itchiness. Some lesions like this one may require systemic antibiotics to fight off infection or prevent a worse one from manifesting. If this truly appeared completely overnight, I would qualify this as a rapidly forming lesion that should be seen in person by a vet. The vet will be able to obtain skin samples and cytology in order to get a better idea of what we are truly dealing with. He will be able to offer you more targeted therapy that may ultimately result in a quicker and more effective healing process.
