My dog's eyes are bulging. Is it related to his recent ear infection?

Hello, sorry to hear about Oscar. Rilexine is an antibiotic that generally can cause GI side effects including a decreased appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. Chlorphenamine can be contra-indicated in dogs that were previously diagnosed with narrow angle glaucoma, however the most common side effects also have to do with GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia). Other side effects include dry mouth, decreased urinations, and sedation. On the picture Oscar appears to be holding his eye lids in an open and comfortable position. His left pupil appears normal size. The rest of the picture is a little blurry but I cannot see any obvious redness or discharge from his eyes. I would monitor for any discharge, squinting, redness, or pain around his eyes and then consider bringing him to your veterinarian if you note any of the above. Otherwise, Shih-Tzu breeds tend to have eyes that are more prominent and bulging out compared to other breeds. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It does seem like her eyes are bulging out a bit in your picture. I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian. Eyes bulging can be a sign of glaucoma (although this is typically painful and the eyes are usually red) or could be related to diseases like extraocular myositis. Tetanus is another disease that can cause both eyes to bulge but you would notice stiffness and difficulty walking as well. If you notice redness or she starts to seem painful you should see a veterinarian right away as glaucoma is an emergency.

I am sorry to hear about Junior. These symptoms are very concerning. I would recommend getting Junior into the vet as soon as possible. With exophthalmos (bulging of the eye) we can have a variety of causes, including an infection/abscess behind the eye, increased pressure inside the eye (glaucoma), inflammation of the muscles around the eye, bleeding within the eye, tumors behind the eye, and more. In some cases, delaying treatment can decrease the chance of return to normal function/maintaining normal vision, so getting Junior in to the vet as soon as possible is important.

Thank you for your question regarding Peppy. I'm sorry to hear about his eye problem. I'm glad that he does not appear painful. He could have a tooth root abscess depending on the location of the affected tooth. On the upper jaw, however, I tend to see them in front of and just below the eye most frequently. He could have an eye infection behind the eye that is pushing it forward. This tends to happen in dogs that chew sticks. They get a wound in the very back of their mouth and it travels up behind the eye. The other consideration is if he has a mass growing behind his eye. He will likely need to see his veterinarian again if it is not resolving. I hope this information helps you and Peppy!

Unfortunately, I would recommed taking Doug to an ER vet. Anytime an eye condition worsens, I consider it an emergency. Eye conditions can become severe enough to permanently damage the eye very quickly and Pugs are prone to having some significant eye problems. I would take Shay into a vet now. Any eye infection should be considered an emergency, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. The vet can prescribe an antibiotic eye ointment to treat the infection.

Poor Rocky! Those eyes do look irritated. He may have a distichia (a stray lash on the inside of the eyelid; as apposed the the eyelids rolling in--entropion which I think is what you are describing he had). Sometimes these cannot be found without magnification. Its also possible that he has another condition such as uveitis (inflammation inside the layer of eye that involves the retina), or he may have KCS, also known as dry eye. If a shermer tear test has not yet been done by your vet, you might ask about it; this is a simple test for dry eye. It may be very beneficial for Rocky to see a veterinary ophthalmologist since he's having some ongoing problems. Specialists can be extremely helpful in these cases.
