My dog has bloody diarrhea after hookworm medication. Is it serious?

It could be that Tinker has diarrhea with blood in it from eating something rotten, a foreign body, parvovirus if he isn't fully vaccinated, intestinal worms, or hemorrhagic gastroenteritis among other causes. When a dog has diarrhea for over 24 hours and when there is blood present in it, it's time to see a vet. This is nothing something that should be treated at home because there can be serious and potentially deadly causes to it. I would take Tinker into a vet as soon as possible. Best of luck.

There should never be blood in stools, so it is certainly abnormal. Some medications could cause bleeding in the GI tract, so I would stop any medications and call the vet for advice. He should be examined by a vet or emergency vet if additional symptoms develop, such as lethargy, poor appetite, or vomiting.

This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites. Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.

That can certainly be normal in puppies. I suggest you video her doing that though so you can show the vet what she is doing. The same with the "nightmares" - video if at all possible. Dogs don't really have nightmares. They can dream and will sometimes "run" or "bark" while dreaming but nothing "violent". I would be concerned that she may be having seizures. I'm not saying it is impossible for her to have night terrors it is just not that common and it is a diagnosis of exclusion. Meaning we cannot test directly for it so we have to rule out all underlying potential medical issues first. Without videos it will be hard for your vet to know what direction to take. I cannot tell you if she has something serious or not. More testing is likely needed. A severe hookworm burden can cause all her symptoms so keep that in mind....

If Loki is having diarrhea with some blood in it, I would recommend a veterinary visit. Depending on the amount of court he swallowed he could develop a G.I. obstruction or perforation. A small amount of blood can be expected not as a result of the deworming per se but more as an effect of the worms that are likely there. If if it just a small amount of possibly blood in the stools, I would continue to monitor him for now. If no improvement is noted within a few days, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
