What food and supplements help a sick cat gain weight after illness?
I recommend feeding Hills a/d. It’s easily digestible, cats usually love it and it is very calorie dense so Watson will start to recover quickly even if he doesn’t eat that much. I would also have a dry kitten food available at all times and offer some tasty cat treats to stimulate his appetite. In addition to feeding many meals daily increasing his exercise will help build muscle and also stimulate his appetite and speed his recovery. The jury is still undecided if Vitamin C really helps pets or not. Cats synthesize their own vitamin C naturally. Likely the best measures you can take are to support over-all health. Make sure they are eating a high quality cat food. Deworm them if possible. Many cats respond well to Lysine for herpes infections. Adults take 500mg twice daily. This can be found in a fish flavored powder, gel and treat form. Also giving them an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for cats will help with natural inflammation control. My senior cat is congested. Can I wait if he's still eating?
As long as Sunshine is eating and drinking you can monitor him at home. I recommend feeding wet food with added water and warm it in the microwave for eight seconds. The food will smell better and increase his eating and the added water will help maintain his normal hydration. If he should become depressed, lethargic or stop eating, please take him back for a recheck right away. He's a senior cat so I don't want him to go long without treatment if he's not feeling well. Prescription Royal Canin recovery canned diet is generally palatable (yummy) to even sick or hospitalized cats and is another option as well that your vet can either sell from his/her practice or prescribe. Comforting an old stray cat with diarrhea, lethargy, and swelling?
There is no medicine you can safely use over the counter for cats. All you can do is encourage her to keep eating and maybe make her an outside shelter to help keep her warm and safe. You can try to add a feline probiotic to the food to help with diarrhea and try to add a GI or intestinal health formula food to help with the diarrhea also.
