Hello. The food toppers are not considered complete foods & they are not nutritionally balanced. If he is eating the recommended amount of dry food for his age & weight, then you can continue with the food topper, but if not & you want to increase his nutritional intake of a balanced diet, then it is best to mix a good canned or wet food in with his dry instead of using the topper. Personally, I feel that if the topper is not nutritionally balanced, then you are feeding empty calories & the only ones who benefit from these products are the manufacturers. Boiled skinless chicken breast or cooked eggs could be added as toppers - just be sure that these foods along with other treats make up less than 10% of the total diet so there aren't any nutritional deficiencies.

Hi there! I highly recommend the website www.balanceit.com if you want to start a homemade (or partially homemade) diet for Otis. It was designed by a veterinary nutritionist, and will help you formulate a balanced diet for your pet that takes into account his age, body condition, any medical issues he might have, etc. It will also recommend any appropriate additives or supplements, if needed.

Is this new that he won't eat his kibble? If so then I recommend bringing Bear to the veterinarian to have him examined. If this is not new I would try adding water to the food to see if he would like it. I would not hand feed him or just feed him piece by piece. Would he eat off of a plate? Or maybe if his bowls are not raised, raising his bowls. I would also make sure he isn't thin. So if your veterinarian said he is ideal weight as long as he is not losing I am not as concerned. They will eat when they are hungry unless something medical is going on. With you hand feeding or adding stuff he is going to wait to eat because he knows he will be getting something else. My favorite brands of food are Acana, Origen, Lotus and Hobest Kitchen. You can see if they are available in your area. Some of the freeze dried raw diets such as honest kitchen are very palatable to picky eaters. I also find that adding fish oil and warm water to dry kibble can be very appetizing. It is also a very healthy supplement for them.
