If there is a secondary bacterial infection, I would recommend using product called Duoxo Chlorhexidine + Calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved. I would also recommend picking up a hydrocortisone spray (Well and Good at Petco) and apply daily to the affected area to relieve inflammation. If it does not resolve or worsens, I would have a veterinarian take a look at Harley so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would recommend using a mixture of betadine and saline or water so that you have a light brown solution and use this to clean the area. I would then apply a wound cream such as Sentry Wound Ointment, which you can find online or at PetCo. Monitor for worsening and if the area becomes swollen or begins to show signs of discharge, I would have Luna examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. Please take the time to mark this question as helpful or not as it helps us to improve on the quality of our answers to other pet owners. Thank you kindly!

This may have started as rain rot but now it looks like there is a secondary infection. I recommend cleaning the area with iodine solution twice daily and keeping him out of tall wet grass or brush which can aggravate this. You can use fly leg protectors to keep flies off it and protect the areas. I do recommend a veterinary exam and treatment since he may need antibiotics or antifungal medication to get this resolved. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for your horse.

Hello. I usually recommend Farnam's Fly-Off Repellent Ointment for wounds & sores like this. It is over the counter & you should be able to find it at any Petco. Just use it on a regular basis to help heal & protect the ears. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hello. It is possible that your mare is highly sensitive to fly bites, & reacts by developing these sores. I would be very diligent with your fly control & consider using a fly mask to protect the face. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
