Choose one brand of food, or a couple flavors of the same brand, and feed that exclusively. Pick a food that has a named protein source of animal origin. Avoid by products or meat meals. Stay away from store or discount brands as these typically contain low quality ingredients and more fillers. Feed on a consistent schedule as opposed to free feeding or allowing grazing throughout the day. Do not constantly change diets if/when your cat does not eat. This can create a finicky eater and may lead to gastrointestinal upset.

Congratulations!! I would recommend making sure you get kitten appropriate toys, two litter boxes and kitten food. At 1 month of age I would recommend a wet kitten food. I would also recommend clumping litter for her. You can always get her other fun stuff like a soft bed for her. I would hold off on any treats until she gets used to her new home. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are several diets available in the market as you have probably noticed. I personally prefer Purina, Royal canin and Science Diet foods as they are of high quality and have research to back up their use. Any of their variations should be good for Maddi. Good luck and have a great day!

It's great that you want to be prepared for your new kitten! Aside from the obvious things for the kitten like food and water bowls, I'd recommend a tall scratching post and perch. Two litter boxes in different areas of the house are recommended. Canned kitten food (and canned adult cat food as Myla gets older) is preferred over dry food. It’s difficult to tell, but I don’t find it’s particularly common for a cat to suddenly change preferences as an adult and become picky. If your vet is concerned about periodontal disease it might be best to go ahead and schedule a full oral and dental exam under anesthesia if it was recommended- there are many oral and dental problems that just can’t be seen on an unsedated oral exam.
