What is ketamine used for in horses? Is a vet needed or can I buy it?
Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Ketamine is a sedative, used primarily in horses & small animals for anesthesia. I know the rules about controlled drugs are pretty lax in SA, so all you can do is ask. If you develop any type of relationship with a veterinarian in your area, they are more apt to help someone out than a complete stranger. Laws about controlled drugs are changing rapidly in the region.

Does Petco provide pet prescriptions, or is it just for advice?
Unfortunately, we cannot (legally and ethically) advise medication without having an established patient-doctor relationship. It is also dangerous for us to advise medication without examining the animal and fully understanding their condition and medical history. The only place to get a prescription is through a veterinary clinic. However, some vets may be comfortable writing prescriptions for well-established clients that they trust know the conditions they are treating for. This service is strictly for advice only. Can I safely buy my dog's prescription eye medication online?
Hopefully it is the same medication, although there have been lawsuits about mislabeled and counterfeit medications with online pharmacies. Also, you do need a prescription from your veterinarian in order to purchase these products. I would recommend visiting with your veterinarian, as there is a possibility they may price match for you.
