Great question! Nexgard kills the deer tick as well as fleas and American dog tick/rocky mountain tick, and lone star tick. It is an oral pill as well, so I would us that for your dogs. Because Nexgard doesn't protect again heartworms, you will have to give your dogs Heartgard as well, which is available by prescription only from the vet. Advantix is a spot on treatment that treats the same things as Nexgard, but you would also have to use Heartgard as well for the heartworms. These two medications (Nexgard and Advantix) are for dogs only. As for the cats, Simparica prevents five types of ticks, so this may work for your cats :-)

If Mojo has sensitive skin, then I would consider an oral flea preventative instead of a topical one. This handout has a link to all flea control products for cats. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952808 I would recommend trying Comfortis ( https://www.comfortis.com/ ). It is a chewable tablet that only needs to be given once a month. Another option may be the Seresto collar ( https://www.petbasics.com/products/seresto/?WHGRedir=1 ) since that does not seem to be as irritating to cats with sensitive skin as the spot on treatments are. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.

Frontline is very safe and well tolerated in cats. So is Advantage Multi- not Advantix- but Advantage Multi- (which also protects your cat against heart-worm disease and intestinal parasites as well)- these products are very safe for cats and they do very well for fleas and a little for ticks. Frontline does not not work for mosquitoes or no see ums. For that you need a product like a Seresto collar- whenever you get into these products the safety is a little less but Seresto is very safe and pretty well tolerated by most casts. It is not like the old flea collar that had Amitraz (those are NOT safe!). I would suggest a Seresto collar and an oral Feline Heartgard chew or topical Advanatge Multi for your cat (combo of both). But you should check with your vet for more info for your particular cat.

I am afraid peppermint oil will just smell very nice but will not touch the fleas, You would be better off doing the following: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your dog when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment: 1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas. Flea products: Spot-ons: Advantage, Advantix Advantage Multi (Advocate in the UK) Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats, in tablet form for dogs Revolution (stronghold in the UK) Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well) House spray: Indoorex
