It is concerning that Mr Darcy is still losing weight when you are feeding him so much. I would recommend more diagnostics if you are unsure of what is going on with Mr Darcy. If you already know what Mr Darcy has I would resubmit the question and it would be easier to provide you with answers. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I recommend a product called Glandex that seems to work well. You give it to them every day. It comes in a powered form and a chewy treat form. A word of caution about grain free diets. I often see dogs who have anal gland issues or constipation issues on these diets. I think it must be related to the fiber. There can be other concerns as well but the majority of dogs on these diets do just fine. However, most dogs do not have food allergies (less than 10% of ALL allergies are to food). Additionally, most of these food allergy dogs are allergic to protein, not grains. I do recommend a high quality food such as Royal Canin or Purina Pro Plan. Lastly, it doesn’t make a difference if the food is canned or kibble. It’s all about the fiber amount and quality. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I like hydrolyzed protein diets for the hypoallergenic diet trial. Hills z/d and Purina HA are my 2 favorites. They make the protein sources so small that the immune system can not recognize it as an allergen. Diet trials should be continued for 12 weeks to know if they are helping. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry that Oscar had this issue. You can put Neosporin on it if you would like. Typically after lancing, anal glands heal up very quickly and easily. The Neosporin will not hurt anything though so it is fine to use. If you do use it, I would get the "plus" version that contains pramoxine which is a topical pain reliever. Warm packing is not necessary, but again, you can sure do that for 5 minutes twice a day for the first few days. It may make him feel a bit better. I don't personally think Glandex works that well. Canned pumpkin is fine to do and for a small dog 1/8 to 1/4 cup once or twice a day is sufficient. Hope this helps! I'd give him Glandex for the anal sac problems, and I can give you a home remedy for the diarrhea. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
