Start now with closing the cat door at night and keeping Kitter in with a litter box available. After a few days or a week keep him inside only. That way he will adjust before the stress of moving. Most cats naturally use the litter box but you may want to confine him to a smaller area with the box at night when he's in. Use plain litter without fragrance and clean it daily and fully empty it and scrub it with mild dish washing soap weekly. Cats are fussy and if the box is dirty they can start going out of the box. Also pick up bath mats and laundry so he doesn't start urinating on those. He should be fine, most cats adjust well. Make sure you play with him a lot and he may enjoy a cat tree since he is probably used to more exercise when he's outside. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Kitter.

I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this with scruff. I would consider Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter (https://www.drelseys.com/shop/cat-attract/) or additive (https://www.drelseys.com/shop/ultra-litter-attractant/). I would also consider covering part of a litterbox in sand or dirt to attract Scruff if she is used to going outside. Some cats hate covered litter boxes and some love them. I would try to use the hints of where Scruff is going to try to replicate those conditions in the litterbox. If she is going in the bath tub or on a tile floor, then leave half of the litter box empty for her go on a hard surface. If she likes soft surfaces, then try shredded paper or a soft paper litter. I would also consider something like Yesterdays News because kittens often like to dig in it (https://www.yesterdaysnews.com/Products/CatLitter.aspx). Good luck! I hope that was helpful and gives you some ideas. Thanks for using PetCoach.

While there is no scientific literature stating that clumping litter is not safe for kittens under 3-4 months, it is something where kittens the young are more curious and may eat it. I would introduce clumping litter after 3-4 months and before that you can use non clumping litters. You can also use the Tidy cats breeze system, which has pellets instead of litter. https://www.chewy.com/s?query=Breeze&query2=Tidy+Cats&rh=brand_facet%3ATidy+Cats&gclid=CjwKCAiA9rjRBRAeEiwA2SV4ZZGRCuV_aF9_QmHa53nyRcwsuSgid-XwU6FgjAm95WHLhxDE7KJp1hoC4F8QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds I would stay away from the biodegradable clumping litters also because if ingested it can cause intestinal upset. Not all kittens will ingest litter but it is something to be cautious about. Thank you for using PetCoach.

Thanks for the info about the litter boxes. Yes, it does matter! The rule is to have one litter box for each cat, plus one extra. So ideally, you should have 11 litter boxes. Anyway, as for a product, I recommend Skout's Honor. I use it when my cats have accidents, and it's amazing. I hope this helps!

Behaviorists recommend as many litter boxes as you have cats plus one. However I have 5 cats and three litter boxes and that works as well. I suggest you go to a big department store and get two plastic storage boxes (the see-through ones), (approx 12 inches high). Use clumping litter and preferably clean out the poop and the clumps every day. If this is not enough, add a third box. I suppose it is trial and error at the end of the day.
