The bigger the aquarium, the better it is for your fish. In aquariums larger than 40 gallons, the increased water volume helps dilute toxins, maintain temperatures and stabilize nitrogen cycles, all key factors in keeping your fish healthy and happy. Petco has a wide variety of large tank choices to fit every style and budget, from standard 40 gallon fish tanks and 40 gallon breeder tanks all the way up to 50 gallon fish tanks and beyond.
Decide whether you want a saltwater or freshwater aquarium, then choose your size. You might opt for a classic 40 gallon long aquarium or 46 gallon bow-front aquarium. Research various species and decide whether you’ll stock an assortment of compatible species or a single, oversized stunner. Once you’ve made those decisions it’s time to select the rightaquarium stand, lighting, filtration system, water care, décor and cleaning accessories. At Petco, we have everything you need to build and stock an impressive high-capacity aquarium to enjoy for a lifetime.
A 50 gallon aquarium can weigh upwards of 440 pounds once you’ve filled it with water and all the décor, substrate and accessories needed to make an aquarium a home. Before you invest in a larger aquarium, make sure your floor can support the weight. And if you rent your home, check your lease. Some apartments and condos limit the size of aquariums allowed.
Even tanks that hold the same volume of water can have very different dimensions. A standard 50 gallon aquarium is generally around 36” L x 20” H x 15” W, while breeder aquariums tend to have a wider base.
Gravel plays an important role in keeping your tank healthy because it is home to beneficial bacteria that help reduce toxins in the water. To ensure good coverage and depth, you’ll need about 1 to 2 pounds per gallon of water to achieve a 1- to 2-inch base.
