Why is important to take puppies to the grooming salon?

Grooming salon visits are beneficial in identifying any skin or coat conditions and help your puppy acclimate to new surroundings, sounds and getting groomed.

How is a Puppy Groom different from an adult dog’s grooming appointment?

At Petco, puppy grooming appointments typically focus on simpler services, but the main difference is the time we take. Wiggly puppies need to get comfortable with the noises and smells, getting their nails trimmed, and of course, a bath.

Our groomers ease your pup into getting familiar with the staff and space, ensure they’re cared for, making every future appointment fun, effective and—most importantly—stress-free!

Pricing at Petco salons is based on your puppy’s size, just like adult dog baths!

Just like with adult dogs, Petco salons price your pup’s visit by weight—not age. This way, your puppy receives the proper amount of attention for their size.

At what age should a puppy go to groomer?

Once your puppy is properly vaccinated and has become more accustomed to handling, you can take him or her to the grooming salon around 10–12 weeks old. Ask your groomer about the particular needs of your breed. For example, a poodle might need grooming every 3-6 weeks and a daily brush at home, while a pug may only need a bath every 6-8 weeks. (we try and get all pets to come in every 6-8 weeks, even if it is just a bath or nail trims). Westies should be groomed every 4-6.

You can help prepare your pup for their first visit to a grooming salon by continual touching of their ears, mouth (teeth), paws (all 4), and, of course, rewarding them for great behavior!

What is Puppy Grooming like at Petco?

Just like adult dogs, puppies at Petco enjoy either a bath or a full-service and haircut.
As is standard with all dog grooming salon appointments, your Petco stylist will complete a 7-Point Pet Care Check* and, if needed, we’ll recommend any vet services your puppy may need. You can read more about what to expect from your first experience at a Grooming Salon. *The 7-Point Pet Care Check is not a substitute for regular examinations and care from a licensed veterinarian. If we find any concerns, we will refer you to your veterinarian.

1. We give your puppy the time they need to adjust

During your puppy’s first visit, we focus on clipper awareness to help them feel comfortable. In rare cases, we may not complete the entire grooming session, and that’s perfectly okay—it’s all about making sure your puppy feels at ease in the salon. Your salon partner will work with you on next steps and what we like to call "homework.” They may also recommend you join one of Petco's dog training classes so your dog trainer can help with socializing your pup in new surroundings.

This is also why wait times for puppies might be longer than for adult dogs. While it’s best to ask your local Petco groomer for an estimate, grooming a puppy or adult dog that is brand-new to grooming can take up to 3–3.5 hours. This allows us to give your pup breaks and helps ensure a calm, stress-free experience as they’re introduced to the grooming process.

Can I speed up my puppy’s bath time at Petco?

If you would like to ensure a shorter salon stay, add the VIP service for an additional $18. This service limits kennel time for your pup, as your groomers will complete the service without disruption.

2. Your puppy will be bathed

The average length of a standard puppy bath at any Petco grooming salon will be about 2 to 3 hours and includes a bath and cleanup around the eyes, feet and rear-end.

You are welcome to walk around the store while your puppy is being groomed but just remember — they might get too excited to complete their bath if they see you nearby!

3. You are notified when your puppy is squeaky clean

When your puppy bath is done, your salon will send you a text or call you to let you know it’s time to pick up your freshly groomed pup.

FAQs about Puppy Grooming at Petco

For the safety of all pets, we require younger dogs to have their starter vaccinations.

  • Under 16 weeks: At least 2 sets of puppy starter vaccinations that include distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus.
  • 16 weeks (or age required by state law): Rabies vaccination.

It is recommended to take your puppy for their next grooming appointment every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on their breed and lifestyle.

Yes! All Petco grooming specialists are enrolled in a 20-week course and complete hundreds of hours of training, which includes puppy baths, haircuts and best practices.

Petco groomers take care to make sure your puppy is carefully introduced to every step of their bath or bath and haircut. They will take breaks and provide other support to puppies who are still getting used to grooming. Petco has comprehensive policies to ensure that every pet is safe and well taken care of while in our Petco grooming salons.

You can reschedule or cancel your puppy’s bath via your account on the Petco app. If possible, it is recommended to submit a reschedule or cancellation with at least 48 hours’ notice.

Most puppies coming in for their first haircut will get a longer trim, as most pet parents want to keep that puppy look a bit longer. They can groom the pup so the hair is a little longer on the body and legs, also known as a "puppy cut,” which usually comes with a cute teddy bear head to mark the occasion. Other pet parents may prefer the same trim but shorter—it really all depends on the look you’re going for. Check out our Groomlish dog grooming glossary to learn more about grooming terminology to help you with explaining what you want when you stop in! Understanding the basics will help you choose the right cut for your puppy’s breed and coat type and give you confidence when discussing services with your groomer.
