What is Interceptor Plus?

Interceptor Plus is a chicken-flavored chewable that kills the immature form of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis). Interceptor Plus also treats and controls adult roundworms (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum), whipworms (Trichuris vulpis), and tapeworms (Taenia pisiformis).

Interceptor Plus is for dogs and puppies that weigh 2 lbs or more, and are 6 weeks of age or older. The safety of Interceptor Plus has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding or in nursing females. Contact your veterinarian before using this product in pregnant, nursing, or breeding animals.

Interceptor Plus chewables contain the active ingredients milbemycin oxime and praziquantel. Milbemycin oxime eliminates the immature stage of heartworm larvae and also treats and controls adult roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Praziquantel is used for the treatment and control of adult tapeworms.

Interceptor Plus must be administered monthly, preferably on the same date each month. It is recommended (and most manufacturer guarantees require) that Interceptor Plus be given year round, although some veterinarians may recommend giving it only during the mosquito season. If given seasonally, the first dose must be given within 30 days of the dog's first seasonal exposure to mosquitoes and continuing until at least 6 months after the dog's last seasonal exposure to mosquitoes. Treatment with fewer than 6 monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm protection. When switching from another heartworm preventive product to Interceptor Plus, the first dose of Interceptor Plus should be given within a month of the last dose of the former product.

Most dogs like the taste of Interceptor Plus chewables and will accept the chewable as a treat. The chewable can be given by hand or added to a small amount of dog food. The chewable should be administered in a manner that encourages the dog to chew, rather than to swallow without chewing. Chewables may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole. Watch the dog closely to be sure the entire dose has been consumed. If not entirely consumed, give another full recommended dose as soon as possible.

Interceptor Plus will kill immature heartworm larvae the dog was exposed to in the preceding month. It will treat an intestinal infection with adult roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. It will not kill fleas.

Chewables.

Talk to your veterinarian about the heartworm testing that is recommended before starting your dog on a heartworm prevention program.

Some intestinal parasites, such as roundworms and hookworms, can be spread to people.

Talk to your veterinarian about other measures you can take to protect yourself and prevent your pet from being infected or re-infected with intestinal worms.

Notify your veterinarian of any other medications or supplements your dog is taking, and also if your dog has had any reactions to previous medications.

If a dose is missed and over 30 days have gone by since the last dose, give Interceptor Plus immediately and resume the monthly dosing schedule. Tell your veterinarian that a dose was missed.

Do not use in puppies less than 6 weeks of age or less than 2 pounds. Not for use in Collies or other herding breeds over the recommended heartworm prevention dose unless under the strict supervision of a veterinarian. Not for use in cats. This medication should only be given to the pet for which it was prescribed.

Side effects of Interceptor Plus are rare but may include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy/depression, drooling, staggering, weakness, and seizures. If you observe any of these side effects, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Interceptor Plus chewables should be stored in a dry place at room temperature, between 59°F and 86°F. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

If you know or suspect your dog has had an overdose, or if you observe vomiting, depression, diarrhea, drooling, staggering, weakness, or seizures, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Although there are no known drug or food interactions with this medication, consult with your veterinarian before using Interceptor Plus with any other medications, including vitamins and supplements, since interactions may occur.
