Training & BehaviorSenior dog separation anxiety barking: What collars or meds help?
At 13 years of age, it would definitely be a shame to have to rehome your dog. I would absolutely try a few different interventions first before even considering that. Look into the Adaptil Collar, which is a collar that releases a substances known to produce a calming affect in dogs. I have had success with this in several cases, though it is not usually immediate. If you are in need of a more immediate intervention, there are definitely medications that you can discuss with your veterinarian that are used to produce a calming effect and reduce anxiety. You might also look into products like the Thundershirt. Lastly, there are collars designed to produce an unpleasant side effect when a dog barks. These can come in the form of water, citronella, or mild electric shock. The citronella collars are completely harmless and often extremely effective, particularly in smaller dogs I have found. Hope this helps.
