Customers say

Customers are divided on this prescription diet formula. Many praise it as life-saving for dogs with severe allergies, IBD, and chronic digestive issues, noting resolved vomiting, diarrhea, and skin problems. However, roughly one-third report the recent formula change caused severe gastrointestinal distress—vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss—in dogs previously stable on it. Some mention physical changes like mushy texture or black spots in cans. Despite the disruption, most customers with allergic dogs continue recommending it as uniquely effective when the formula works for their pet.

Great To Assist in Pill Giving

We are using this product as our vehicle for all of the pills that our pup has to take. He comes RUNNING when he hears the can hit the counter. The consistency is perfect to hide all 10 pills that he takes twice a day!

Fussy Pomeranian with IBD Approved!

My fussy little senior Pomeranian with IBD loves this loaf canned dog food! Another brand changed their formula and he didn't like the taste, so we had to find something new. After trying various brands I finally found one that works for the little puffball. PLEASE don't change the formula because this is the only prescription canned food that he will eat.

Happy dog, no more tummy issues

I’m really impressed with Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein Loaf canned wet dog food. My dog has a pretty sensitive stomach and we’ve struggled to find something that doesn’t cause issues and this has worked really well. He actually gets excited at mealtime now and eats it right away, which hasn’t always happened with other prescription foods. The texture is soft and easy to mix and I like knowing it’s designed for dogs with food sensitivities. He's had hardly any digestive problems since switching, and he just seems more comfortable. Definitely a great option if your dog needs a limited or hydrolyzed diet.

I bought this food and was not sure if it would make a difference. WOW. It did!! Not only does my baby love the food, but the skin and coat is 10000 times better! I’ve been in this business for 22 years and have sold and always promoted Rotal Canin. Now actually being a customer, I can fully attest that this food is amazing!

Highly processed, hydrolyzed, dog food

My Dachshund was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and was prescribed RCHP canned dog food along with a daily probiotic and fiber. This food runs right through him and I doubt if it’s even digested or the nutrients are even absorbed…the food goes in and out the same, looks like soft served chocolate ice cream…he has multiple soft bowel movements…just awful food…

More water - Less Food in every can

Disappointed pet owner

The formulation has changed to include WAY more liquid, which means it can no longer be considered a "loaf". So now I am paying the same price for far fewer calories. My dog also hates it and I am stuck with 24 cans I just ordered. Too bad, as we really loved this product before. Will ask my vet to prescribe a different food.

Chicken does not agree with my dog. This formula change is devastating for dogs with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I switched to Royal Canine because of Hills has chicken. May as well go back to Hills. Very sad to hear how this is change is affecting so many dogs.

Great for our dog with terminal cancer

Nels8

We were given this food after our dog was diagnosed with terminal cancer and experiencing GI issues. The vet warned us that it's not uncommon for dogs to not like the taste. Fortunately, our dog does and even when he refuses all of his dry food options, he will eat this. I would suggest people try buying a couple of cans to test instead of boxes. This food has helped keep our dog alive, so we are very appreciative.

Questions

1 - 6 of 6 Questions

I just started with this wet food and it isnt like other wet dog foods. It does not “spoon” out or come out “moist” but rather it comes out “crumbly“ and in pieces. Just want to make sure it is fresh and is suppose to be this consistency?

  1. This food is very thick, I take a fork and mush it up really good and add a little water to it so it’s a little thicker then gravy. Plus my dog never drinks water anymore because he gets all the fluid he needs from wet food & the water I fix in. My 16   years cat hasn’t drank water in over 6 years because he also eats sticky can food. I do leave fresh water out every day, but they never drink it.

Is the wet HP Veterinary diet the same as the dry HP moderate calorie food? Also, the back of the can has two calorie contents-1012 kcal ME and 395 kcal ME/can. Is it the per can? My dog is on a calorie restrictive and low protein diet for pancreatitis.

  1. No the canned Hydrolyzed Protein is significantly higher in fat as compared to the HP Moderate Calorie and would not be recommended for a pet with pancreatitis

My dog is 81 lbs. How much should I be feeding him? I give him a combination of dry and wet food, but he prefers wet. I noticed he leaves his food when there is more dry food in his plate.

  1. We recommend to feed 2 cans +1 7/8 cups of dry food a day

What are the feeding guidelines for a 10 pound dog?

  1. There are none on the can. I feed my 12 lb dog about a 1/4 of the can mixed with about 2 tbls of dry kibble. that is enough for her. Hope that helps.

Can you use this for a cat? I've been looking for a wet food alternative for cats, and there isn't any available.

  1. No, the canine formula does not meet the nutritional needs of a cat

What is daily serving size per can for 60 lb dog?

  1. It depends on whether you’re feeding the dry food also. If just feeding the cans the recommended amount for a 60 pound dog is 3 cans a day. That’s very expensive! We free feed the dry Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein food and 1 can of the canned per day.
