The filters are great but do not last as long as they said they should before we have to replace.

Quality has changed
I've been using these filters for several years and noticed recently that the carbon gets into every nook and cranny and is very difficult to clean. I think they have changed the manufacturer. I will be buying a new fountain of a different brand.

Our filters use carbon made from coconut husks which can have some dust in varying quantities depending on how large the carbon pieces are within the filter. To reduce carbon dust in the fountain, we recommend to fully rinse and shake the filter a few times in cool water before placing the filter in the fountain. How long do I need to rinse a new filter before putting it in the fountain?
- Thank you for this question, Shirley. You would want to rinse your new carbon filter not based on a certain amount if time, but instead based on when you stop seeing carbon dust coming from the filter in large amounts. Typically, you would rinse it with cold water, shake a few times and rinse once more.

Are the filters encased in plastic? If so, is it recycleable if the filter medium is removed?
- There are two filters, one is not in plastic at all that holds the bottom of the pump. The second filter goes on the top and is a white cylindrical filter with the filtering media contained inside. I do not see how you would recycle this piece. However, I love this fountain and my pets love the fresh water and the interesting flow. I would buy it again.
