Customers say

Customers overwhelmingly praise this timothy hay for strong pet acceptance, with rabbits and guinea pigs eagerly consuming it and often refusing alternatives. Many describe it as green, fresh, and sweet-smelling, with pets showing long-term loyalty. However, a substantial group reports recent quality declines, noting brown stems, excessive dust, and thin texture compared to past purchases. Some customers report discarding portions due to poor condition. Despite these concerns, most remain loyal, citing the 50-pound box value and their pets' strong preference. Overall, reviewers recommend it despite inconsistency issues.

Awful hay!

Dee Dee

I use to like this hay for my bunny but the quality has completely changed! Absolutely awful! Every bag so far over the last 5 months have been rotten smelling, discolored yellow faded colored, tons of plastic pieces, dead flat embedded bugs, brown stringy nest like! Dusty! Health hazard! Poor quality! I had to return 5 bags within 2 months! I'm disappointed in this company! I need to find another hay for bunny and his heath! This is not the best hay at all!

I learned years ago from the vet I was using at the time that timothy hay is what adult piggies should eat; not Alfalfa, that's is too high in protein and can cause stones and other problems. Hay is like their catnip they popcorn and toss their heads when I offer it to them. Also when they want more treats but they've already had too many, hay quiets them right down

Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought the 20lb box and the pieces that came are all fine mossy like pieces? Theres no Big Crunchy or nice bright green ones like I’ve gotten in the 9lb boxes, i dont know if this box just sucks but my bun is also not very interested in these hay pieces as he usually is. This really sucks because now it feels like 40 dollars down the drain and a big box of hay my bunny doesn’t even like.

No, I do not recommend this product.

I highly recommend Western Timothy hay! Since I started feeding this to my rabbit, I’ve noticed a huge difference in their health. Their poop changed for the better, and their tummy is no longer bloated. If you have an adult rabbit, Timothy hay is an absolute must for their diet. My rabbit seems to love the "Western" type the most. It is thicker than other varieties, which I think is amazing because it really helps with their dental health and wearing down their teeth. My rabbit loves it, and it keeps them super healthy!

Pieces are very small and the hay is mostly dusty

I've been buying the Oxbow Timothy Hay for my now 8 year old lionhead rabbit for almost three years and never had a problem. I've purchased it in various sizes, the 40oz, 90oz, and when it was available the 25lb box. With that last option no longer being offered, I decided to get the 40lb box and I hate it. The pieces are smaller than normal, it's largely just a bunch of dust my rabbit doesn't eat, and this is the first time I've found twigs in it. I feel like my rabbit hardly eats this anymore and most of it goes to waste. Not to mention the pieces are so small I'm constantly cleaning hay pieces off her face to stay out of her eyes. I might just have to switch back to the 90oz bags and see if its any better. My rabbit seemed to enjoy chewing on the longer pieces of hay and with this new order, the pieces are just smaller than normal and lots of hay dust in the box. Maybe good for a guinea pig or hamster, but not what I'd expect for a rabbit - and not my experience the last few years. Very disappointed.

No, I do not recommend this product.

No more 50lb boxes. Ordered 40lb box with massive 71% increase in price since my last 50lb box order. Hay comes pressure packed into two 25lb bags. Useless. I'll pour the hay into my old 50lb box with liner. Hay pieces are very small and a lot of broken hay. No stalks of hay present just small hand fulls of mossy-like hay. Reviews by other buyers back what I write and give mostly 1 star reviews.

HORRIBLE QUALITY

The quality of Oxbow hay (every kind) has deteriorated horribly since 2023. I have found foreign objects in various bags (bale twine, thick white cord, unidentifiable hard woody stalks, and dried insects). Some bags are just packaged dust, no strand longer than three inches. Others are full of moldy seed heads and damp hay, as if the hay was rolled and packaged while wet. Other bags are full of wads of brown dead pieces of hay, or huge straw like pieces that a camel would have trouble eating. Then there are the bags full of sharp needle-like stems and seed heads so long that they caused my bunny to choke badly. It is deeply distressing as this an essential for a rabbit and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find healthy hay. What is happening at Oxbow?

Hate the new large packs of hay

I used to love this product, for starters it is no longer 50lbs it's 40lbs now for the same price. It used to be long pieces of hay lightly packed. Now it is 2 super super tightly packed bags that are so hard to get the hay. I have gotten so many small pieces of hay in my fingers. It is also super super pieces maybe 4 to 5 inches. It looks like what the hay normally looks like when my bunnies are done with it. I am very very disappointed with this hay now. I will be looking for a new brand to buy if they dont change the current product. Huge disappointed

Questions

1 - 6 of 6 Questions

How long dose the 50lb last two Guinea Pigs?

  1. Too long.   Buy a smaller amount because the hay will turn.   This hay is garbage and I hope that you did not buy it.   My rabbit would devour her hay up until I introduced this crap.   This hay is suitable for only bedding in my opinion.

What cutting is this?

  1. 2nd

I just purchased the 50 lbs box and I’m am wondering the best way to store it. I live in California and hope to go though it pretty fast I do have 4 bunnies. So what are the recommendations keep it in the box it comes in or store air tight ?

  1. I just keep it in the box it comes in and have had no issues. Just "close up" the inside plastic that it comes wrapped in so that it doesn't get too stale. It stays fresh for a very very long time.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the 9 pound hay bag? I don't know if I have room for nine pounds.

  1. The dimensions of the 9 pound bags are 8.5 x 24.02 x 15.98 inches. It's parked in there so not loose like 90oz bags.

50 lbs box dimensions?

  1. racingrabbits, Thank you for your question. The 50 LB box of Western Timothy Hay from Oxbow Animal Health measures 24 x 18 x 24.

Is the 9 lbs in a bag or box?

  1. it's in a bag
