Customers say

Customers overwhelmingly praise how dogs enthusiastically devour the food, with many noting visible excitement, bowl-licking, and renewed appetite in previously picky eaters. Reviewers express strong confidence in the balanced, vet-endorsed nutrition and appreciate controlling ingredients with human-grade, locally sourced components. Many value the rewarding DIY preparation experience using simple recipes adaptable to crockpot or Instant Pot methods. A few report minor digestive adjustments or recipe inconsistencies, but these concerns are vastly outweighed by the consistent positive feedback across breeds and ages.

Her favorite is definitely the beef with chicken second. Fish seems to be the least favorite She eats it but not as readily. I hope to make turkey as soon as I can find turkey liver. It’s hard to find.

Did not meet my dog’s needs. I was told thighs cannot be replaced with breasts for lower fat diet.

Happy dog! Some tips to make it easier. . . .

My dog loves this food and I love that I can give him a solid nutritious meal that I know is good quality. I make this DIY recipe and get the frozen shipments also to balance the cost/work. We've been doing instapot recipe and its very easy and fast; but it is a lot of chopping. Things that make this go much faster: meat grinder to turn chicken thighs into ground chicken (i have a kitchen aid mixer so i got the attachment) and a food processor. If you have one or both of these appliances it will be faster. Chopping 2 lbs of chicken thighs is a time consuming and messy task so I chose to grind. Also I may try the slow cooker b/c my instapot isn't big enough for the large batch.

We just quit delivery and decided to make our own food. I won't sugarcoat this. I thought it was going to be easy and it is not. However, JustFoodForDogs takes a lot of the guesswork out of the meals and provides essential nutrients that are crucial in these recipes. If you're going to make your own food and you don't know where to begin, this is the place to start. You won't regret it.

Rescue food for Rescued dog

Ruben D.

My pup is now 13+. She is a rescue dog who had trauma. When I adopted her, her teeth were already knawed down to almost her gums. 10 years later and she has changed so much for the better, except her teeth. I have lived a life on a budget, but I try to be smart with my money for that reason. When I did research for better food for my dog to chew, I realized that most dog food, kibble or canned, are all still not adequate for our dogs. That's when I discovered Justfoodfordogs DIY. I was able to buy fresh food, make the food with love for my dog, while my dog not only ate super healthy but didn't have to hurt her teeth and gums just to feel like a pup again. I don't know what else to say other than it's a win win win all around for everyone plus my dog. This is an honest review. And I want to thank you for just existing. I was feeling hopeless for my dog. She had 2 mass growth on her under belly, and both times had to get them removed. They were huge and I honestly believed it was a result of both kibble and canned food. Without giving away any named products, the kibble and canned foods weren't bottom shelf either. Would you feed your human loved one canned or overly cooked dried food for the rest of their lives, even if you saw their health diminish? On this review, I checked 6 things that my dog had issues with. But she is healthy now. All 6, things have already been dealt with and she is not only super healthy now but she looks healthier than she ever was, even in her prime. She still has arthritis, but she doesn't delay in getting up anymore, and she can independently go up and down stairs. Thank you once again for bringing back my pup.

Picky no more!

My dog loves his new food. He used to be very picky and would often refuse his old food. Now he gobbles it up! It’s not that hard to make and I know I’m giving him safe and nutritious food.

My dog is not liking it. He’s having a hard time transitioning to new food and prefers the old. I’ve been mixing it for several days now and he’s not interested.

Questions

1 - 10 of 17 Questions

Does this mix tell you how much of the meat and vegetables to use per package? Im wanting to try this but i didn't see anywhere that stated how much meat and vegetables to use per package?

  1. Yup! There is a recipe card you can download that tells you exactly how much to use of what. I find a food processor and instant pot the easiest way to cook everything.

Does this contain taurine?

  1. It is not listed as an ingredient.

Can you please send me the instant pot and crackpot recipes for all of the DIY canister dog food recipes?

  1. Scroll down for the link to a pdf file: https://www.justfoodfordogs.com/product/do-it-yourself-nutrient-blend-chicken/60030102.html

Could you send me the Crock Pot recipe for the CHICKEN and RICE for DIY Kit? Also, can you substitute Chicken Breast for some of the Chicken Legs or Thighs in Recipe?

  1. You probably need to contact Just Food 4 Dogs directly to get those answers. (949) 722-3647 or (866) 423-9405. They are open 7 days a week.

Can blueberries be substituted for the apple in the chicken formula? How long can the DYI food be kept in the freezer? Can you send me the crock pot recipe?

  1. I didn't think there could be substitutions. I would guess how long is lasts in the freezer depends on how well it's packaged. Wish I had the crock pot recipe also. I would imagine you were hoping for a response from the manufacturer.

I got the chicken and rice canister. Can I substitute the rice for quinoa? I do not believe starch is good for dogs.

  1. Contact Just Food For Dogs directly about that. They are very responsive. I use the Chicken and Rice and the Turkey and Noodle. I do mix things up a bit depending on available ingredients. https://www.justfoodfordogs.com/contact-us/

We are using our Instapot, cooking the large recipe for three pups every other day. I noticed someone asked a question above regarding a specific recipe that is available for that appliance. Could you please send that along?

  1. https://gallery.mailchimp.com/50f92c38c7d41e6dc55d1b84d/files/ec6d294b-7609-4f42-be40-63617ee0db3f/JustFoodForDogs_DIY_Cooking_Recipe_Instructions_for_Instapot_Slowcooker_v1019.pdf?utm_campaign=News%20Welcome%20Series%20-%20Email%201%20%28Ns24Z7%29&utm_medium=email&utm_source=OPTIN%20-%20Cook%20Day%20Download&_ke=eyJrbF9lbWFpbCI6ICJjaGVyaWVsYWRhbXNAeWFob28uY29tIiwgImtsX2NvbXBhbnlfaWQiOiAiTXY5QVg2In0%3D

The JustFoodForDogs Chicken and White Rice recipe is very similar to a recipe I have been using and supplement with organic turmeric and powdered egg shells.  Does the calcium in this blend meet the daily requirement?

  1.  This is completely balanced to AAFCO standards for every nutrient dogs need as long as you follow the recipe perfectly!

can this be used with other DIY dog food recipes or this specific recipe?

  1. My dog didn’t like the fish recipe. My husband also didn’t like how cooking the fish smelled up the house. So I asked JustFoodForDogs fish would be close to balanced with another recipe, just to use it up some other way. It did not get a personalized reply. Just a it won’t be balance with any other recipe. They did send me a free DYI chicken (my dog’s favorite).

Can you freeze the food you make?

  1. Absolutely! I make the full batches according to the recipe included in the canister and it is enough for two medium (50 lb) dogs to last for a bout 7 days worth of dinners. I only feed this as a meal (2 cups each dog) once a day but have dry food available at other times. I keep a couple of days worth of food in the fridge and freeze the rest in measured bowls. I take out a freezer bowl every time I use up a bowl from the fridge. Good Luck, my dogs absolutely love their much healthier home made food!
