Creates anaerobic pockets that kill shrimp

AquariumGal

This is very heavy and dense, which caused anaerobic pockets that killed several of my shrimp. So you can't really move it around to clean it because of that and it also clouds the tank alot if you do so. I threw it all out and put in big, chunky ceramic media from Biorb. I like this better because it's very porous, allowing for oxygen to flow while helping create surface area for biofilm.

No, I do not recommend this product.

I bought this substrate for my 5 gallon shrimp tank in January 2026. I rinsed it really well like people recommended and thought it looked awesome. Cut to 6 months later- I'm having issues with anaerobic gas pockets even though my substrate is only 1 inch deep, I only have 20 shrimp (bioload is so small), and I don't overfeed (2-3 times a week, in a dish which I remove after a few hours). These gas pockets have been causing deaths lately and now I have to remove my shrimp, redo the entire substrate and try to keep them alive. I found other people on Reddit who had the same experience I did with not that much sand depth. It's just too thick and dense and doesn't allow for any water flow, which causes these toxic gas pockets to form. I would not recommend this product even though it looks good. I personally will never try sand substrate again as this has been a horrible experience.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Pretty Sand

It's very pretty and I like the black color. But unless you get it super wet and rinse it super well. It's going to float and clump up. Use tongs to get the air bubbles out and solve this issue. It gets stuck very easily in my gravel vacuum and ends up in the bottom of my bucket. It mixes very well with other sand and can create cool features in the bottom of your tank.

No, I do not recommend this product.

The sand itself is not bad. I soaked it for 48 hours and it settled fine. My corydoras did not care for it. It's much too abrasive. They wouldn't even sit on it.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 10 of 15 Questions

Will this sand be fine for african cichlids ?

  1. Hello, good day! The Imagitarium White Aquarium Sand, 20 lbs. is good and safe for African cichlids.

What is the grain size for the black sand

  1. This 20 lb. bag of black sand is usually large enough for a 20- to 30-gallon tank, depending on how deep you want it to be. Around 1-inch is typically deep enough for aquarium sand, but if you plan on having live plants, you’ll need a sand depth of 2- to 3-inches.

would this be good for Neocaridina Shrimp?

  1. It's ok for neocaridina shrimp

Ok, so I want to get a betta fish. Can anyone help me with the tank size? Is this sand good? Should I get something else in there with the betta, like what do bettas like?

  1. For a betta I would do a 5 or 10 gal and I would definitely use this sand.  It’s the best sand out there, doesn’t require rinsing and never clouds the water.  I have several tanks and this is the only sand I’ll use. Plus, it’s easier on bettas flowing fins.  And I wouldn’t put anything with a betta.  That way you won’t have to worry about potential fin nipping nor stressing out your betta.

I am trying to wash my sand and it keeps dying my bucket tub and water blue , I don’t feel like it’s safe for my fish with this much dye . Did I get a faulty bags what is wrong with this , it was been wash and mixed over 30 times and the water still turns

  1. I have used about 10 bags of this sand in my 200 gallon tank. I have not experienced any problems with dead fish. However, when I first got it I used a strainer with mesh laundry bags to rinse the sand over a bucket with a garden hose. I would then dump the bucket, and repeat. I did this several times allowing the sand to completely run clear in the bucket below the strainer before adding to the tank. It is easiest and best to add this to a tank before there is water in it. But I did add some after there was water in it. The best way to add sand to your tank with water in it is to take a plastic cup, fill the cup with sand, and slowly lower it into the tank. Then dump it out slowly. Even after rinsing it you will still get some cloudiness that will eventually settle or be filtered out. Some of the sand will float. Just use your hand or a net to slash it then it will sink. Once the sand is all in your tank then you can fill it SLOWLY trying not to disturb the sand. My water is 100% clear. No dead fish. No blue residue at all. Your best bet is to rinse it very well as I said above until it is clean. Once you think it is clean keep going for a bit longer to make sure. If all else fails you can do up to 75% water changes once a week. Just make sure to add water conditioner, and put the right tempature of water in it to match the tank water so you don't shock the fish. When adding fresh water make sure to do it very slowly. Anyway, good luck!

is this good for goldfish

  1. Yes, definitely.  I have several tanks of ornamental goldfish and this is the only sand I’ll use.  It doesn’t discolor or cloud water which is important because goldfish constantly sift through it.  Goldfish should never have gravel as a substrate of any kind.  It’s a choking hazard for them and will cut their mouths.  Good luck!

Can I use this sand for my Triops?

  1. Hi, Imagitarium Aquarium Sand Substrate is suitable for Triops due to its non-toxic, fish-safe composition and fine grain size, which accommodates their natural digging and egg-burying behaviors in freshwater environments. It is recommended to use 2-3 inches of the substrate and rinse it thoroughly before use. Thanks.

Is there any crushed coral in this? It seems to have raised my pH A LOT.

  1. No crushed coral.  Aquarium usually raises ph some temporarily.  Iv used this sand in all colors in all my tanks and have not had any real issues but I don’t test for ph unless I think there’s a problem.  I rarely lose fish.  If you’re cycling a new tank, it should lower.  Good luck.

Im getting a 20 gallon tank for 4 Platys, how many pounds should I get?

  1. 1 lb. of sand per gallon.

I set up my aquarium with this black sand yesterday and today there is what looks like a metal/metallic sheen in one spot. Like anodized metal. Any ideas?
