Very strong output, adjustment valve does not do anything. Maybe better for a much larger tank but not what it’s advertised for at all.

No, I do not recommend this product.

I bought this about a week ago and my betta loves it. It's calm enough where he'll swim around the whole tank Rather than before

The Imagitarium Mini Powered Sponge Filter sounds like a fantastic find! It's exciting to hear how impressed you are with its performance right out of the box, especially at such a great price. Thank you!

Too powerful for betta!

This sucked my betta to it (I had to free him) and injured his right fin 😭 now he’s swimming with it clamped to his body and I seriously doubt he will survive. I had already turned the bubble nozzle toward the wall, because despite the control valve almost tightened the whole way, it was still way too powerful.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Perfect for my shrimp, bettas and guppies. This is definitely built for bigger tanks, I noticed a bit of splash back with the flow at the lowest setting but then I realized the entire filter needed to be submerged and this helped get rid of 98% of the splash back. I still get little bubbles like you would with carbonated soda when the water level lowers so you know when you need to fill it up more as time goes on. I love the aeration tube, it adds bubbles on top of filtering the water and even my snail will climb the filter to sit in front of the bubbles. I saw other reviews saying the flow was too strong, it does say this filter is ideal for up to 8 gallons, I use it in my 6 gallon and my 3.5 gallon with no issues, just make sure it’s fully submerged enough to not cause too much of a splash if that’s not what you’re looking for. I know some people with bigger tanks might like the water fall / ripple effect but it can be reduced to virtually no splash in smaller tanks as well. :)

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great for my 10 g planted tank. I love this filter design and wish more manufacturers would build similar products. It is versatile and I like it! We will see how long the motor and impeller stay going but I do not expect too many issues. They have replacement parts and I will be purchasing a couple more for other tank setups.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great for simple use!

I bought this 3 months ago, it has been great! The water flow is a little strong like others have said, but not to the rediculous extent. Please note this filter is SUBMEGABLE, and is made to be fully under water. The spout should not be above the waterline, unless you want it to spray out like a hose. I have it in a 10 gallon tank even though the filter is made for up to 8gal, but it has kept everything flowing perfectly and crystal clear. This filter is a little harsh for your floating plants, but if you put a foam ring around your floaters it keeps them from being thrown underwater.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Seems to do its job

Been running for a couple weeks and seems to be doing its job. The flow is stronger than I’d expect for small tanks. I solved that initially by turning the flow nozzle around and blowing it toward the wall, but it started making gurgling noises, so I ultimately ended up taking the nozzle off entirely. Works great! Now the water just flows up like a little fountain (filter is fully submerged) and provides gentle surface agitation without blowing fish everywhere, and is surprisingly quiet.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 10 of 10 Questions

Does the filter require an air pump to work?

  1. The filter does not need an air pump to operate, it plugs into the wall to power an electric motor. You have the option of adding an air pump to the filter to aerate the water.

Petco says two versions of filter. Petco CS posted 7 month ago:"17-37 gph which is probably what is still out there" and a newer version "which the flow rate was adjusted to 8.5-37 gph." How do I get new version? Can only find old version in local stores.

  1. Hi, The updated model is arriving in our stores as older stock is sold through. To increase your likelihood of finding the newer version with the 8.5–37 gph flow rate, we suggest calling your local Petco store to check their latest shipments. If a lower flow rate is your main interest, our team can help you find another filter that meets your aquarium's needs.  Thanks.

Does this filter work well with a 2.5 gallon tank with cherry shrimp

  1. Yes, it is recommended for up to 8-gallon aquariums and is Ideal for low-flow or shrimp aquariums.

Can I use this in a 2.5 gallon tank and will it create too much water flow for cherry shrimp?

  1. Ideal for low-flow or shrimp aquariums, Recommended for up to 8-gallon aquariums

Is it ideal for a 5.5 gallon tank with a betta?

  1. Hi Nate, Good day! Yes, this powered sponge filter is recommended for up to 8-gallon aquariums. Thanks,

What size is the tubing?

How many gallons per hour does this filter cycle?

    1. Hi kalat, Good day! The original version was 17-37 gph which is probably what is still out there. There is a newer version flowing out to stores as they sell down on the original which the flow rate was adjusted to 8.5-37 gph. Thanks

“Optional aeration tubing?” What is the for? Why is this part included without any explanation? Do I want to use? Do I not want to use it? I don’t know, because I am not an experienced aquarium wrangler. The Imaginarium line is just for experts.

    1. Hi J7189997 Good day! Optional aeration in a filter can add air bubbles to the water to improve oxygen levels, circulation, and biological activity. Thanks

Can I use two of these at the same time for a 15 gallon tank?

    1. Hi Bub101, Good day! This Mini Powered Sponge Filter is recommended for up to 8-gallon aquariums. Thanks,
