Customers say

Customers are sharply divided over this canned food. Many report their cats refuse the reformulated version, citing pasty texture, unpleasant odor, and new ingredients like pecan shells and fish oil as problematic for sensitive cats. However, a substantial group credits the original formula as life-saving for cats with severe allergies, IBD, and kidney disease, noting their pets stopped vomiting, gained weight, and recovered health. The lack of advance notice intensified frustration among long-term users. While a few cats accept the new formula, most dissatisfied customers feel betrayed after years of trust in the product's effectiveness.

Good Eats for an IBD Cat!

RRNorth

I tried the canine version of this several years ago and my pet would not eat it. It was with some concern I opted to try this for my IBD cat and was pleased to find he loves it. We are still working to get his symptoms under control but fortunately l’m not battling the nutrition side of the equation.

Hills Z/D Wet.

My Vet, is putting my cats on a trial diet and prescribed both Hills Dry & Wet Z/D formulas. I am already feeding them the dry. I am reluctant to fill the script for the wet with all the bad reviews for the new formula. Unfortunately there are not a lot of options. Contacting my Vet for alternative diet.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Requires smaller cans

Cannot really give this a good review. Have to throw away after half a can due to nasty grey color and smell after small serving and 1 day's time. Would not buy if another option found.

Why mess with a good thing?

My cat is hospitalized for IBD. The vet wants me to put him on a hydrolyzed diet. . Your canned ZD is currently the only canned hydrolyzed feline food on the market, but I have done nothing but read terrible reviews about it all weekend since you changed the formula. It was working so well for cats before you messed with it, so why would you do that? People’s cats will not eat it now and people say that when they do eat it they get sick. Why would you put ground pecan shells in a cat food? I’m not gonna order this for my cat based on all the bad reviews,, so it looks like he’ll just be eating hydrolyzed kibble. Sounds to me like you should start making the old recipe again.

To maintain our leadership in nutritional health care for companion animals, we periodically make changes to product formulas to incorporate additional health or product design benefits. Ground pecan shells received an official AAFCO definition in 2011 with an intended use as a source of dietary fiber. In a pecan cracking plant, the pecan shell receives water washings, a 180 degree hot water wash and subsequent drying after separation from pecan meats. There is no warning on the bag concerning nut meat contamination as this level is expected to be in the low parts per million level.

I'm a veterinarian and bought this food for a food trial for my cat (one needs a food trial the other is along for the ride). Bought canned and dry. They refused to eat the canned and eat the dry reluctantly, both eating much less than normally. I wanted to try a limited ingredient canned but there is very little currently available in prescription form. Will this be changing? What about a derm complete for cats? Anything new upcoming?

Pretty good but...

We began using this after the reformulation. My cat likes it pretty well, and probably finds it less objectionable than I do. It is too dense and pasty. Another reviewer suggested mixing in a little water, which changes the texture and makes it easier for the cat to eat. Use hot water if just taken out of the fridge. Sometimes my cat eats it right away, sometimes leaves and comes back later, and occasionally I have to toss it. I give her small amounts more frequently, which helps. It does seem to have improved her health. We wish it came in more than one flavor.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Botched rollout of bad new formulation

CKDIBDHyperthyroid

First off, to the rep who was responding to do a seven-day transition between the old formula and new, how were any of us supposed to do that when no one was informed of the new formulation?! I'm seconding what's already been echoed about my cat not being a huge fan of the new formula and needing smaller cans, though he will still eat it, begrudgingly. But to change a therapeutic, prescription food without informing customers is so wildly irresponsible. A lot of us who have resorted to this expensive food do so because our fur babies can have reactions to a wide variety of things. We comb over ingredient lists and we put our trust in Hill's. This is like if you usually get ibuprofen but they sold you naproxen without telling you because it's basically the same thing, right? And for many folks it will be, but some folks have a naproxen allergy! I shouldn't need to check every shipment of a product I've had on auto ship consistently for over 2 years before the formula change. I've trusted Hill's, so why would I? This would be frustrating if it was regular cat food, but for a prescription, it's unacceptable.

Questions

1 - 5 of 5 Questions

My cat is getting older now at 8 and she keeps throwing up her soft food. I give her hard food also. Hopefully Hills Science Diet will help her tummy feel so much better. My question is if you will bring back the old formula please?!!! Thank you

What is the calorie count for each can? Thanks.

    1. This is what is on the label: 1114 kcal ME/kg;174 kcal ME/can

Has Hills Prescription z/d cat canned food been discontinued? I can't seem to find it anywhere!

    1. I am not having any trouble finding it, try their website - https://www.hillspet.com/cat-food/pd-zd-feline-canned

Does this z/d prescription diet cat food come in any other flavors?

Why does cat food need Vet authorization?

      1. A couple different reasons: some prescription foods are not "nutritionally complete" and can results in deficiencies if used exclusively for a long periods of time. Also, they are not a stand alone solution to health problems, and the animals should be under the care of a veterinarian.
