Customers say

Customers overwhelmingly praise this prescription diet for effectively managing feline hyperthyroidism without medication. Most report dramatic improvements—cats regain weight, stop vomiting, improve coat quality, and return to normal energy within weeks, with many thriving for years. While most cats readily accept both wet and dry versions, some picky eaters initially resist. Customers deeply appreciate the convenience and emotional relief of managing the condition through diet rather than daily pills or invasive procedures. A few note limited product variety, and a small subset report their cats still refuse it. Overall, reviewers consider it life-changing and highly recommend it.

It is Easy to Treat Feline Hyperthyroidism with Y/D

Dr. Blackwell

My 16.5 year old cat Adonis became hyperthyroid. He was losing weight and his T4 was elevated at 5.8 with the normal range between 0.8 and 4.7. I started him on Y/D exclusively and within a few weeks his T4 was within the normal range at 2.4. It is still early in his treatment but his haircoat does not appear to be as scruffy and his activity has increased. He had been on I/D dry and the switch to Y/D dry was uneventful. He likes the Y/D dry.

Need more choices

My kitty started on the hills prescription thyroid care about one week ago. He’ll eat the dry but he’s always liked wet food better. Unfortunately, there is only one thyroid Care wet food and it’s like pate but thicker. My cat does not like this at all, but it is forced to eat it for now. I wish hills would make a few different choices for the thyroid care and also some thyroid care treats.

Y/D works!

I did not have many choices to make for my elderly cat. He had a terrible reaction to thyroid medication and surgery wasn't an option. We started the diet Y/D and he looks like a whole new cat. He loves the canned and nibbles on the dry. I highly recommend this diet!

My thyroid kitty loves this with her dry! I’m so thankful she was able to eat this food since her body wanted to reject her methimazole. After a stressful move, adding the wet food has helped and she loves it!

Fantastic Hyperthyroid Option

This diet is nothing short of amazing! I have been in the Veterinary field for 25+ years and our first thought to treat hyperthyroidism has always been Methimazole. I have an Acromegaly cat who is now hyperthyroid and he was initially started on Methimazole. Within 3 weeks of starting Methimazole he developed acute liver toxicity. The medication was discontinued and we opted to transition to Y/D. I was praying for a miracle and hoping his diabetes would not be horribly thrown off. Fast forward to 4 weeks after the full transition to Y/D, and his liver values are now normal again, his thyroid values are in the high normal range and my cat loves the diet. I couldn't be happier! Thank you!

Questions

1 - 4 of 4 Questions

My vet recommended the YD diet for my 15 yr. old cat that has hyperthyroidism. I also have 2 other cats in the house that are would be eating the same food but they do not have high thyroid. Would it be safe to feed this YD diet food to all 3 kitties?

  1. I'm sure it would be safe for them. YD simply has all of the iodine removed from it. Just be aware that YD food is REALLY expensive compared to other foods because of the process that is required to make it.

my cat has thyroid issues and been having problems with medication as it is now causing diarrhea for the past three months. Can she eat this food and take the medication? Is this food a replacement of meds or can both be given?

  1. Thank you for your question. We would suggest speaking to your veterinarain about medications. We hope this helps. Hill's Pet Nutrition

Is this product carried in any Petco store or only online?

  1. Hi Kitt125, All prescription pet foods are only available online.

I'm trying to figure the cost per serving of the Feline Prescription Diet y/d Thyroid verses oral medication. If my cat is 6 lbs. and it is recommended to give 1/3 cup daily, how many servings per 4 lbs bag are there?

  1. Hi Thyroid, Four bags of the 8.5 lbs Hill's Prescription Diet y/d Thyroid Care Original Dry Cat Food would make approximately 385 serving. Given that 1/3 cup weighs 40 grams. Thanks
