Customers say

Customers praise the product for rapidly eliminating algae and restoring water clarity, with many reporting visible results within hours and sustained clarity for weeks. However, a substantial number report severe fish deaths even when following dosage instructions correctly, describing outcomes like "2/3 fish died" and "everything except the algae died." Some customers note limited effectiveness against specific algae types like red slime or stubborn black algae. Despite the polarized feedback, most customers find the algae-fighting results compelling, though the fish safety concerns warrant careful consideration before use.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I didn’t really think the performance was very good. I used it in my tank but didn’t see any improvement to the algae. After using this product I also had several fish die, I’m not sure if it was related or not.

Clearer water, dead fish... use at own risk...

The title pretty much says it all... have a 30 gallon tank, used just under 3ml as directed and wished i had done more research on this product before using it... i hope this review helps folks avoid my experience! i had vibrant molly fish and all of them have turned into bottom feeder zombies... hope they last over the next few days... also have a large breeder box with 23 molly fry... i am down to 15 and counting... all fish were doing great until i added this product... what a disaster! after some research, here's what i found... adding algaecide kills algae but in the process of dying algae, oxygen is depleted from your tank... also, the chemicals in algaecide can be harmful to your fish... (yes, the bottle reads "WILL NOT HARM FISH")... so they recommend a 50%-75% water change to bring oxygen back into the tank and dilute the algaecide chemicals from the water... SAY WHAT? if i am doing that, might as well just drain out all the water, clean the tank of algae (and the crappy algaecide chemicals) and start with fresh water again.... Like i said, what a DISASTER! Company should reconsider its marketing claims and do better research to provide a product that actually kills algae and not our fish... Best of luck...

No, I do not recommend this product.

Works but possibly harmful to snails

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I did not use this product more than once. It did seem to help with the algae but it seemed harmful to my snail. It could be unrelated but my snail started laying upside down at the bottom of the tank in the same spot for days. I thought it was dead. But then it would be in a different spot. I finally saw it move one day so it is alive but it is no longer as active as it used to be. It could have just been a coincidence but I am not taking any more chances. There was no smell and it was easy to use and seemed like it was doing what it was supposed to but I'm not sure if it is snail safe.

Questions

1 - 10 of 43 Questions

Will this product help kill Blue Green Algae (BGA) and is it recommended to increase aeration after use in a planted tank?

is this product safe for nerite, mystery, and rabbit snails?

    1. According to the label info it is safe for freshwater fish if used as directed, but do not overdose. DO NOT USE ON freshwater crustaceans including shrimp, crabs, or lobsters. I personally have never had any snails in my tanks, but I believe they actually feed on algae while helping to clean it from the tank. It's never a bad idea to do research on water requirements for snails before adding them or chemicals to a tank!

Can I use this in a tank with live plants?

    1. Yes, Algaefix can be used with live plants.

Hello. Is this product safe to use in a tank with a red eared slider?

    1. Yes, this is able to be used in aquariums or ponds containing red eared sliders.

is this product safe in a saltwater aquarium with several hermit crabs and a snail?

    1. Yes, this is ok to use with saltwater crustaceans. This product is not safe for freshwater crustaceans.

does this work on brown algae (diatoms)? any remedies you care to pass on that are effective, yet non-toxic to my 11-year old turtle ("mr. turtle") would be appreciated...thx!

Can I use this to kill algae growing on moss?

I have a 2 gallon tank. What amount should i use?

        1. Use an eye dropper and do no more than 2-3 drops.

Is API Algaefix safe to use for aquatic turtles?

        1. Yes, as long as it's dosed correctly.

I added less than 1 ml of the Algaefix to my water with a betta and two snails, 24 hours after adding both of my snails were dead. They were perfectly fine until adding this product. Curious to why?

        1. Directions specifically say NOT to use if you have snails or other crustaceans like shrimp, lobster and I would think crawfish.
