I haven't heard of anyone recommending pickle juice for rabbits or rats, but there are many odd anecdotes out there that don't have any real scientific basis. This is one of them, so good on you to ask an expert.

The truth is that they probably could drink it and be fine, but there is no known benefit and it would be an inappropriate addition to the diet; especially for rabbits. For those reasons, I would not recommend giving it to them. I recommend sticking to the professionally formulated diets and natural diet for optimal health.

Thanks for reaching out about Fluffy. There is a relatively low risk of cross-contamination but a possibility. Diseases such as leptosporosis or Encephalitozoan cuniculi can be horizontally transmitted through the urine and feces, it really depends on what area of the United States you live in. Contacting a local veterinarian with experience with rabbits and exotics should be able to answer those questions. If concerned, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic plan. Good luck.

Hudson likely would be just fine even if he ate some of the pickle. If he is walking, eating, drinking normally and not lethargic/tired there is nothing that you would need to do other than just offering him his regular food treats in the future! Good luck!

Mostly, if I can not get them to take their medication in fruit juices, fig newtons have worked well. But whatever you can think of that Dimounds might take the medicine please feel free to try. My large dog ate a pickle from garlic brine. Is it toxic?

This is unlikely to cause an issue as the garlic itself has to be swallowed and the pickle juice likely diluted out the garlic quite a bit. I would just recommend monitoring Ayler for the next 24 hrs for any unusual behavior or illness (vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite) and seek a vet if needed. However it is unlikely to cause any major problems for Ayler. Take care.

My rat won't drink her antibiotic water. What are my options?

You may need to mix the antibiotic in a syringe of water and give it to her that way. If the antibiotic is a liquid you may also be able to mix it with peanut butter and feed it to her. You will need to ask your veterinarian about the exact dosage because it will be very different from the amount you’re putting in her water bottle.
