My pet mice are naughty. Is it okay to tap their nose for discipline?

yes, mice can make good pets if you handle them enough. They need their cage cleaned once a week. Rats can also make very engaging pets. Mice are fastidious groomers, & will consume anything left on their bodies. You must clean the cage & replace any bedding that is soiled immediately to control odors. If the cage is clean, the mice will not smell too bad. If the cage granules indicate they can be used with mice, then by all means use it. Otherwise, use a rodent friendly substrate to keep your mice happy & healthy. Take care.

A handful of different components can lead to respiratory infections in mice, whether viruses or bacteria. Mycoplasmal infections, for example, often occur in mice. When mice have respiratory infections, they often display cold-like clues, including problems breathing normally and runny noses. If your mouse is breathing in a manner that seems inordinately loud, a respiratory infection could be responsible. Other typical symptoms of respiratory infections in mice are weight loss, reduced desire to eat, exhaustion, barely moving around and messy looking fur. The bedding in Popcorn's enclosure could be the reason for her persistent sneezing as well. Ask your veterinarian for types of bedding that are less dusty and cause less irritation to the nostrils. If the sneezing is the result of any illness, your veterinarian can provide treatment options. Remember, mice, like other pets, require regular vet checkups regardless of the presence of signs of illness. Take your mice to the vet a minimum of once annually. If she sneezes or seems sick, go to the vet immediately, even if she just had her yearly appointment. I hope this is helpful!

Since you had the room well ventilated while using the polish your mice should be fine. If this is something you will be doing frequently I would move the mice out of the room while you are using the chemicals so they won't be repeatedly exposed to it.

Your friend’s mice were probably just startled for some reason when you approached them today. I would recommend that you continue to engage and interact with them regularly to help gain their trust. The mice are in a relatively new environment and are probably very prone to stress. I would also recommend separating the pregnant mouse from the other two mice. Her pregnancy and birth can be very stressful and so anything you can do to help relieve her anxieties/stress would be good for her. I hope this helps. Ask your veterinarian if the medication can be compounded or flavored. This could make administration easier. When done properly, scruffing the neck is an acceptable, safe and painless way to restrain a small pet such as a mouse.

Training to know what is chewable (their toys) and what is not (fingers, furniture) is by a combination of positive and negative reinforcement. A good guide to training in puppies might be useful. Putting something like bitter apples or Tabasco sauce on your fingers might work some, but also don't want to make then hand shy. Good luck.
