What's the most humane way to dispatch rats caught in live traps?

Hello there! This little rat does not look very good at all. Unfortunately, there are many different diseases that outdoor rats can have - some that are zoonotic (this means transmissable to humans and other animals, so be sure to wash well after handling him) - and without a complete workup by a vet, it's not likely that he's going to survive the next couple of days. Even if you do bring him to the vet, there might not be much that can be done for him at this point. He is thin, he has a hunched body posture (an indicator of pain and severe stress), and his sunken, squinted eyes indicate dehydration. The respiratory symptoms you mentioned are very common in wild rat species, and are usually fatal. I highly suggest that you contact a veterinarian and consider humane euthanasia for this guy. You could also try to call a wildlife rehabber, but only if you can get in touch with one that will take the rat immediately. You can feed commercial rodent food. It typically comes in a block or pellet form. Rats are omnivorous and will eat just about anything though. Supplement with fresh vegetables and small amounts of fruits. Ideally, if it is not injured, you should set it free. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Warfarin is an anti-coagulant. It prevents Vitamin K from binding and allowing proper formation of clotting factors. So the mouse dies by bleeding to death. They probably feel weak and dizzy and very sleepy. I am sure overall it isn't pleasant but not likely painful. But then again it is a poison. Yes, it appears to be safe for dogs and cats. From the website: "It coats the lining of a part of the rodent’s lower gut. I would still recommend that you place it in areas where your pets do not have access, and certainly not allow them to eat large quantities of this as it could cause vomiting and diarrhea.
