My guinea pig's GI infection is worse after vet medicine. What now?

Hello. I assume your previous veterinary visits resulted in x-rays, antibiotics, & a good assessment of diet & environmental conditions. If a dust free environment was not suggested, then change to something like Yesterdays News. If not, that is where I would start. Many young GPs can get a respiratory infection called Bordetella. Treatment involves using the antibiotics enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg once daily), & doxycycline ( 2.5 mg/kg every 12 hours ). Nebulization using saline & enrofloxacin may be very useful. Your veterinarian can recommend a protocol, but I like to do this 3 times daily for 10 minutes. Treatment with antibiotics & nebulization may need to be continued for as long as 21 days. Hi, no it is not a normal side effect. I would discontinue the medication and ring your vet to let them know. In the meantime you can syringe feed your Guinea pig some recovery food , oxbow or supreme science in the UK. I'm sorry Ginger isn't feeling well. There are many causes for diarrhea/loss of appetite in guinea pigs. Most of these are easily treated and include intestinal parasites, bacterial infections, or improper diet. If Ginger has a pelleted diet, she should also have access to hay and leafy vegetables. Unfortunately, the only way to diagnose Ginger is with a veterinary exam, which would potentially include a fecal exam, blood work, and some x-rays. I hope this helps!

If the stools are watery then Bob is suffering from a gastrointestinal infection, which can be quite severe in guinea pigs and requires antibiotic treatment. the only supplement you can get in the meantime that may help is a fiber supplement called "fibreflex" you may be able to find it in pet stores.

Many antibiotics cause gastrointestinal issues in cats so you will need to call your vet and let them know what is going on. Most likely they will have you stop one or both of the antibiotics and prescribe something different. I would also suggest that you put him on a pre/probiotic while he is taking antibiotics and then continue for at least one week after the antibiotics have been stopped. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
