Can my female ferrets live together after mating and during pregnancy?

Your jill's vulva should return to normal within a week of mating. Pregnancy can be confirmed 2 weeks after mating. Ideally, she should be spayed to prevent serious complications related to the heat cycle and not being mated.

Hi and thanks for your request. Probably she is not accepting the male as she is not in heat or she is already pregnant. As said in a previous question, I would recommend to separate them as you suggested or castrate the males to avoid further unwanted pregnancies.

I recommend separating the male and female now before the female gives birth to avoid potential cannibalism of the pups by the male. Other than the female having an obviously distended belly, females have a shorter anogenital distance than males and lack a scrotum. For the pregnant female, I would not try to house her with other females until after the pups are weaned at 3 weeks of age (also to prevent cannibalism). When ready, the split cage method is recommended for introducing males or females that are not from the same litter. It involves keeping the 2 males (or 2 females) separated by a divider (plexiglass with holes drilled placed corner to corner dividing the enclosure into 2 triangles works well) and switching the gerbils 4-5 times a day for at least a week to get them accustomed to each other' ascents. After a week remove the divider only when you are able to carefully monitor them for fighting for 5-6 hours or longer. Generally they cannot be safely left alone together until you see them grooming each other and sleeping next to each other. Even then, if you notice any bite marks/wounds on either gerbil, separate immediately and do not attempt to rehouse together. Best of luck!

Another male ferret would be a fine idea, and you can start by getting them used to each other by housing their cages next to each other to allow them to get used to each other without touching. This can then progress to supervised play periods together outside their cages to ensure that they will get along. Good luck!

Hello! Yes, I would recommend getting Bandit spayed. Female ferrets will continuously go into heat until they are bred. This, over time, causes a common syndrome of estrogen toxicity and fatal bone marrow suppression in intact female ferrets. She will have a much longer and happier life if she is spayed while she is young. :) I hope this is helpful! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

If the male cat is irritating your pregnant female the best thing you can do is to keep them separated until after the kittens are born. It should not affect the kittens if they are around each other but it may lead to undue stress for your female cat. If you are unable to safely separate them at home you may want to consider boarding the male cat or having him stay with a friend or family member until the kittens are born. It may also be beneficial to have the male neutered as soon as possible. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.

Ferrets are social little animals, so they tend to get along with each other rather well. However, there are occasionally some anti-social ferrets that tend to fight with other ferrets. You also have to watch for bullying behavior, which can happen when a bigger ferret is around small ones. I recommend introducing them in a neutral territory (definitely not in the cage) like a room, or a temporary play pen. You should be observe them the whole time and stop any aggressive behavior. If all goes well with the first introduction (two or more hours), then you can experiment with giving them access to Daisy's cage and see if there is any problems there. The introductions should be mostly hands-off unless you are breaking up a fight. Let the ferrets find each other and interact with each other in their own way. I hope that helps and all goes well with the introduction.
