My dog is bleeding from her vagina but seems fine. Should I worry?

As long as Cocoa is acting normally otherwise you can probably wait to go to the veterinarian first thing tomorrow morning. However, if she shows any other abnormal signs then I would recommend going to the emergency veterinarian tonight. She may have a urinary tract infection, which although uncomfortable, is not an emergency to be seen immediately. There's a very small chance this could be related to something called stump pyometra which is an infection of the uterine stump in spayed female dogs. A stump pyometra can be an emergency, however usually would result in lethargy, fever, or inappetance. I'm wondering if Brownie is spayed or not. If she isn't spayed, I would be very concerned that this bleeding could be due to a pyometra. A pyometra is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and is a medical emergency. Even if she is spayed, it's still a medical emergency when a dog is bleeding a lot. She needs veterinary care now, and you have to take her into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Yes she should be starting her period soon. You know that a pet is having their period because you will see a very swollen vagina and sometimes a decrease in appetite. So this could explain what you are seeing. Look at Hina's genital area to see if it is indeed swollen. A pets period lasts anywhere from 2-4 weeks on average. And the decrease in appetite is normal during the first week of a pets menstrual cycle, but should improve gradually. If the blood is not coming from her genital area and is instead coming from her rectum, then its best to have her seen by your vet for further treatment. If she was spayed over the weekend, this looks like a normal bit of discharge. It's not excessive and doesn't look there is any bright red blood in it. Since she is otherwise acting normally, it's fine to wait until 8am to give her vet a call, but I suspect they may say it's normal discharge. I hope this helps!

If your elderly dog has vaginal bleeding you should have her seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible because that is not normal. If she has not been spayed it could be a sign of a uterus infection called pyometra which can be fatal if not treated immediately. Also it could be possible that she has blood in her urine which could be a sign of a urinary tract infection or possibly stones. If she worsens in any way, becomes lethargic, starts vomiting, or starts bleeding more, you should have her seen by a veterinarian immediately.

Bleeding from the vulva is normal in intact female dogs during their heat cycle. But if Riley isn't currently in heat, or if the amount of blood you're seeing is more than normal for her, then I would be concerned that something else may be going on. Bleeding from this area can be caused by bladder stones, infections, a bleeding disorder of some kind, or even a vaginal tumor. It would be best to have Riley examined by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is causing the bleeding and get her started on appropriate treatment.
