My bearded dragon eats bugs but won't eat veggies. What can I do?

Updated on September 23, 2025

My bearded dragon loves to eat bugs such as super worms but won't eat his bell peppers or apples. His former home he was just adopted from said he ate fine especially bell peppers. What should I do?

You can try other veggies as well, Beardies often eat much less veggies than they eat bugs, some don't eat veggies at all. just try different types of veggies and hopefully you will find something he eventually likes.

At this age be aware that greens should only be about 25-30% of his diet so try not to overload him with them. When you do offer them, they should be finely chopped so he can easily eat them (not large leafs of lettuce, etc). Offer greens (a small amount) once per day. Try a different variety of things daily to see what he likes.

You may want to try this salad dressing to entice him:

Keep offering greens. Make sure to dice them small enough for him to eat. Add some apples, mangoes, grapes, strawberries, blueberries or peaches to get him to eat. Waxworms, hornworms, crickets or dubia roaches can also be mixed in or sprinkled on top. Be patient and offer fresh greens, fruits and vegetables daily. You can even handfeed him to get him started.
Make sure he is well hydrated and has proper temperatures. Both play important roles in digestion in reptiles.
