Penicillin G is an antibiotic used in dogs, cats and other pets. Certain species, including snakes, birds, turtles, guinea pigs and chinchillas are reported to be sensitive to procaine penicillin. While many medications are often administered for ‘off-label’ or 'extra-label' use in veterinary medicine, it is important to know that off- or extra- label use of a medication can only be done by a veterinarian when there are no other more appropriate medications for a particular pet's circumstances. Your veterinarian must also know all vitamins, supplements, medications etc. your pet is taking to help avoid complications. You must also be sure to follow all instructions provided by your vet carefully and consult your veterinarian with any questions or concerns if they arise.
Penicillin G is generally used for urinary tract infections, skin infections and respiratory infections.
Penicillin G disrupts the cell wall of certain bacteria which causes bacterial death.
Dogs and Cats: 20,000-40,000 units per kilogram of body weight given subcutaneously or intramuscularly every 6-8 hours.
Penicillin G for injection is available in many different concentrations.
See label for instructions specific to each product. Injectable formulations should be kept refrigerated. Some products are only good for 7 days after opening. Check the drug label for specific handling and storage instructions.
Providing the bacteria is susceptible to Penicillin G, symptoms of the infection should begin to resolve within 24-48 hours. Continue treatments until the infection is completely resolved.
If a dose is missed, continue the next dose at the scheduled time.
Side effects can be more severe with overdose.
May include:
*Do not use in animals with penicillin allergies.
*Do not inject more than 30 milliliters intramuscularly in one location.
No known drug interactions have been reported.
Do not use in animals that have penicillin allergies. High doses of penicillin G can cause electrolyte disturbances when there is underlying renal disease, congestive heart failure, or electrolye abnormality.
