General description

Methionine is used as a urinary acidifier. It is used for the treatment and prevention of struvite urinary stones.

Uses

Struvite crystalluria

How it works

Struvite urinary crystals form when the urine is too alkaline. Methionine is metabolized into sulfuric acid in the body which is then expelled in the urinary tract. This acidifies the urine in the body which then decreases the likelihood of struvite crystal formation.

Dosage

Dogs and Cats: 150-300 milligrams per kilogram given orally every 8 hours.

Forms

500 milligram tablets are available for animals.

Storage information & handling

Store tablets in a cool, dry place away from light.

What results can I expect?

Your veterinarian will want to monitor the pH of your pet’s urine while on this medication to ensure it’s working. Once the pH is normal, your veterinarian may adjust how often you give this medication. Struvite crystals may be a transient finding that does not require special care particularly in dogs. Struvite stones in dogs are most often the result of a urinary tract infection which cannot be prevented by urine acidification.

Missed Dosage

If a dose is missed, continue the next dose at the scheduled time.

Overdose / acute toxicity

Overdose can cause metabolic acidosis. This is a medical emergency.

If your pet receives an overdose, please seek immediate veterinary attention.

Side effects

May include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Weakness
  • Pale or blue mucous membranes
  • Incoordination
  • Staggering

Contraindications

*Do not use in animals that are already on prescription urinary diets.

*Do not use in pets with liver, kidney or pancreatic disease.

Drug interactions

No known drug interactions.

Precaution

Do NOT use if the pet is on a special diet that also acidifies the urine unless directed by your veterinarian.
