Mebendazole is a dewormer used in dogs for common intestinal parasites, including roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms and whipworms. These parasites are often present in the canine population and regular deworming with medications like mebendazole can help prevent spread in the infection and limit zoonotic infection of these parasites to people. Not approved for use in cats.
Parasitic disease in dogs. Treatment of 1 type of roundworm (ascarid), 2 types of hookworms, whipworms, and 1 type of tapeworm (not effective against the flea tapeworm) in dogs.
Mebendazole prevents glucose and nutrient uptake in the parasites, causing them to fail to survive in their host.
Dogs: 9-11 milligrams per pound of body weight given in food daily for 3-5 consecutive days depending on the parasite being treated.
Mix with a small amount of food which should be eaten before the pet gets the remainder of the meal to ensure the entire amount of medication is ingested.
Puppies and kittens need to be tested and dewormed frequently according to a worming schedule and as advised by your veterinarian.
Mebendazole is supplied in powder and tablet form.
Store in a tightly closed container at room temperature.
Mebendazole begins killing parasites within hours of administration but must be given for 3-5 days to completely kill the parasites.
If a dose is missed, continue treatment at the next scheduled dosing time.
