Fluid and electrolyte loss
Lactulose is a medication that is used as a stool softener to treat constipation in dogs and cats. It is used commonly in cats with megacolon. It may also be used in the treatment of liver disease in small pets and birds to help reduce ammonia that can build up in the blood due to liver disease.
Buy Lactulose now on Petco. A prescription from your veterinarian may be needed to purchase. While many medications are administered for ‘off-label’ or 'extra-label' use in veterinary medicine, it is important your veterinarian knows all vitamins, supplements, and medications your pet is taking. You must also be sure to follow all instructions provided by your vet carefully and consult your veterinarian with any questions or concerns if they arise.
Off- or extra- label use of a medication can only be done by a veterinarian who has direct and personal knowledge of your pet and when there are no other appropriate medications for a particular pet's circumstances.
Hepatic encephalopathy, hyperammonemia, constipation
Lactulose causes water retention in the intestine and lowers the pH of the colon.
Dogs and Cats: 1 milligram per 4.5 kilograms of body weight given orally every 8 hours until no longer needed.
10 gram/15 milliliter liquid form.
Store solution in a tightly sealed container away from light.
Lactulose is used until results are seen. In cases of constipation, lactulose usually begins working as a laxative within 1-2 days. In cases of hepatic encephalopathy, ammonia decrease will depend on the severity of the liver disease.
Continue dose at the next scheduled time.
Overdose is rare, but it can cause excessive fluid loss and dehydration.
May include:
*Do not use in animals with allergies to this medication, pets with a gastrointestinal obstruction and should be used with caution in pets who are diabetic, pregnant or lactating, .or have a fluid electrolyte imbalance.
Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications, supplements, vitamins or herbal supplements you are providing to your pet. Medications such as antacids, laxatives, neomycin, gentamicin, or warfarin should be used with caution.
