Control itching due to atopic dermatitis
Hydroxyzine competes with histamine for sites on H1-receptors.
Dogs: 2 milligrams per kilogram of body weight by mouth every 12 hours.
Cats: 5-10 milligrams per cat by mouth every 12 hours.
The medication dosages listed represent the variation in dosing for all underlying medical conditions.
Medications should only be administered to pets under the direct guidance of a veterinarian.
Hydroxyzine for oral use is available in 10, 25 and 50 milligram tablets.
Hydroxyzine oral syrup/solution is available in 10 milligrams per 5 milliliters concentration.
Hydroxyzine capsules for oral use are available in 25, 50 and 100 milligrams.
Hydroxyzine is also available for injection in 25 milligrams per milliliter concentration.
Hydroxyzine should be stored at room temperature in light-resistant containers.
If given regularly, itching due to atopic dermatitis may be decreased. Sedation is also a common side effect seen in pets receiving hydroxyzine.
If a dose is missed, continue with the next dosage at the scheduled time.
An overdose will likely cause increased sedation and possibly hypotension (low blood pressure). Fine, rapid tremors and rarely seizures will also occur with overdoses. There is no specific antidote available. Treatment consists of supportive and symptomatic care. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet may have received an overdose of hydroxyzine.
