Uses

To treat bacterial and fungal ear infections in dogs.

How it works

Gentamicin/Betamethasone-Otic works by stopping the growth of bacteria and yeast in the ear, as well as reducing secondary inflammation due to the steroid effects of betamethasone.

Dosage

Dogs: for dogs 15 kilograms of body weight and under, apply 4 drops to the affected ear twice daily for 7 days. For dogs that weigh more than 15 kilograms, apply 8 drops to the affected ear twice daily for 7 days.

Forms

Gentamicin/Betamethasone-Otic ointment is available in 7.5 gram or 15 gram tubes.

Storage information & handling

Store ointment in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.

What results can I expect?

Gentamicin/Betamethasone-Otic will begin to kill the bacteria and yeast causing the infection once given. The infection should start to clear during the treatment course as long as the bacteria are able to be treated with gentamicin. Treatment needs to occur for a total of 7 days to effectively rid the ear of all yeast and bacteria.

Missed Dosage

If a dose is missed, continue with the next dosage at the scheduled time.

Overdose / acute toxicity

Overdose is rare, but if animals ingest the ointment they may experience increased drinking and urination.

Side effects

May include:

  • Head shaking
  • Increased appetite
  • Weight gain
  • Panting
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Behavior changes
  • Hearing loss, pinnal curling or folding

Contraindications

*Do not use in animals who require their hearing to perform their work (military dogs, police dogs, seeing eye dogs, hearing dogs, etc.) as the hearing or vestibular (balance) impairment may not be reversible.

*Do not be used in animals with a perforated eardrum.

Drug interactions

Do not use with other steroids.

Precaution

Do not allow animals to ingest this medication. It should only be used topically in the ears.
